tions to the rover that fixed the prob- lem mission manager Jim Erickson said Saturday The glitch occurred because scientists had instructed Opportunity to ' perform what could have been an unsafe movement with the robotic arm Faired with the conflict between that instruction and its safely instructions the rover stopped with its robotic arm still extended until scientists revised the commands ' “The rover is sometimes smarter than we are” said Erickson “The trick is to catch these on the ground and resequence them correctly before we send them up” With that problem solved scientists wanted Opportunity to dig four inches or so into the soil using one ' of its front wheels as an excavator ' They hoped the move would expose minerals that could reveal whether Mars eVer was wet enough to sup-port life Opportunity’s twin rover Spirit was on the other side of the planet inspecting two rocks nicknamed “Stone Council” and “Mimi” and the surrounding soil before resuming its trip toward a crater about 1100 feet away iron-beari- This undated handout of the surface of Jupiter’s moon Europa was photographed by the Galileo Orbiter viewing a small region of the thin disrupted ice crust in the Conamara region showing the interplay of surface color with ice structures Space SEATTLE (AP) —Hie skills and technology used to explore the extreme depths of the Earth’s oceans will soon find work in outer space Scientists are making plans to probe the icy seas of Jupiter’s moons and drop a lander to the bizarre gasoline- like lakes of Titan a moon of Saturn Early plans call for orbiting the Jovian moons with craft that can measure tides and penetrate ice with special radar These are techniques that oceanographers have used to probe the Earth’s waters: Later plans would mean landing packages on the icy surfaces and per-“The possibilities of studying the ' haps drilling down searching for liqextraterrestrial oceans in the solar uid water the most likely domain of life Johnson said : system is now real” said Torrence Some researchers believe radioacJohnson a scientist at the Jet Propul-tive and tidal heating may form deep sion Laboratory Johnson speaking Saturday at die reservoirs of liquid water beneath the national meeting of the American ice and that life forms may exist Association for the Advancement of there enduring the extreme presScience said researchers are drawsures and darkness Oceanographers have found some bacteria living in ing up plans to send orbiters to ' such conditions in the Earth’s black and The two Ganymede Europa with he covered moons depths Jupiter may ' oceans under miles-thic- k Johnson said planetary scientists layers of ' iceare leaning on V techniques that oceanographers have used Oceanography said Johnson is no “We are turning to our oceanolonger just an Earth science “The universe is awash with graphic colleagues who make things ' work at the unbelievable pressures” water” he said “Europa probably contains twice as much water as all said Johnson Studies for the exploration of the of the oceans of Earth” long-test- -- ed scientists hope that in the upcoming generations probes can be sent to explore the oceans of the large icy satellites orbiting the outer planets to woirfc an space oceans of Jupiter's moons will be completed next year Johnson said the National Aeronautics and Space Administration will draw up plan for the projects Exploration of die surface ofTitan a moon of Saturn will start even sooner The Cassini spacecraft launched seven yean ago will reach Saturn in July and drop a probe to the moon’s surface in January Titan a frigid world about half the Earth’s size is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmos- phere Smog generated by a thick nitrogen atmosphere four times denser than the Earth’s obscures Titan’s surface “Titan is the largest piece of unexplored real estate in the solar system said Ralph Lorenz a University of Arizona planetary scientist and a leader of the Cassini project Radar images from Earth telescopes and infrared photos from the Hubble Space Telescope have penetrated Titan’s tmog ana detected bright and dark regions An analysis of the infrared data suggests the dark regions are seas of methane and ethane hydrocarbons that could form compounds umilar to gasoline “The simplest explanation may be that these smooth areas are lakes or seas” Lorenz said Deep below the surface of Titan through miles of ice scientists believe there may be oceans of liquid water perhaps saturated with organic compounds that could support life “If you introduce microbes into that then they may survive” Lorenz -
