than they used to according to a study by a University of Utah professor In 1973 adults from divorced parents were almost three times more likely than adults from undivorccd parents to end their marriages By 1996 die ratio dropped by SO percent with adults from divorced families 14 times more likely to divorce than their counterparts said Nicholas Wolfinger The assistant professor in the U's depart- ment of family and consumer studies reviewed surveys of 22000 adults taken annually or biennially from 1973 to 1996 Wolfinger has a couple of reasons to explain his findings With more than half of US marriages ending in divorce the stigma of divorcing has Obituaries home life and because they — like those whose parents did not divorce — were more cohabit Wolfinger said likely The professor is not without his critics David Blankenhom president of the Institute for American Values in New York said Wolfinger's study wrongfully suggests the gone away Wolfinger said Wednesday Parents also divorce earlier in their marriages than they used to before their problems with each other harm their children he said And to a lesser extent children of divorce are divorcing less as adults because they don’t many as often as they used to he explained In the early 1970s they were 36 percent more likely to many than children from undivorced parents Wolfinger said children whose parents were having problems would marry to leave their house or because they felt a “sense of psychological neediness that results from growing up in a divorced family" By 1996 children of divorce were 3 percent less likely to many than others probably because they didn’t have to escape a bad public should not worry about the high divorce rate "The implications would be if you're a parent and have problems the best thing to do is get divorced right away" he said He's not surprised that children of divorce are acting more like children from undivorced parents when they grow up but not because divorce has become less harmful "When marriage is getting weaker it seems logical you would see a lessening of differences” he said Racist message Tennessee woman braves to swim river
