They work six days a week for the two months After Utah the crew still has interviews with the state winners in Oregon Washington Nevada Arizona and Hawaii When crew members show up at a contestant's the pageant The director took notes and a list of questions and information about Vanessa and her family to Rccht the day before Vanessa’s interview In an effort to make the pageant more appealing to viewers these video segments are aimed at showing the contestants as the normal “girl next door" When Vanessa appeared in a short denim skirt and striped sweater Recht asked her to change She next City Council members said Wednesday night City Manager Jim Gass said car-linstreets near the campus create irritations for property owners whose driveways are often blocked and whose yards are littered with garbage and crossed by trespassers With school starting in two weeks Gass said the school board is running out of time to remedy the problem “It's not a good situation or it will not be a good situation as soon as school starts” Gass said “The school district has not really done anything to address studcnt-to-teach- er ed the request" District Superintendent Steve Norton said the board has looked at several scenarios but there is no simple solution to the parking problem At the end of the 1998-9- 9 school year the Sky View driver's training range was opened for parking but students who had already developed other habits didn't want to walk the distance “There's no question in my mind that the students will have to use parking — there hasn't been a high school that I've seen in my career that hasn't had to use parking” Norton said “As long as there is parking allowed on those streets I think students have a right to park there as much as anyone” Unless the schx)l and community can cooperate Norton said the school district's only solution is to buy more land for parking a costly alternative “The patrons of the district would have to weigh whether it is worth spending money to buy parking lots or cooperate for the few hours every day the streets are used” he said “We'd have to go back to (he public and ask them to vote whether they want to spend that kind of money" Norton said the parking situation at Sky View was tolerable before construc tion on a new recreation center gvinna-siuand several classrooms began in April Once the projects are completed the situation will remedy itself lie said Because of the new construction the school will lose 40 parking spots hut gain 120 according to city officials But Smithfield Sccretarv I Van Clegg said 80 new parking spots will inl scratch the surface of (he problem latst year more than 20f) cars could be found parked along the streets on school days There was not enough parking at Sky View before the construction project began he said City officials said Smith-fiel- d has inherited the school district’s problems “One concern is we will not be able to clean the snow off the streets because we won't have any place to push it” egg said “Some of our streets are so narrow that if you park a car on each side there's hardly room for cars to pass m there" But Norton said the district and city are equally responsible for dealing with the traffic problem He defended the rights of high school students saying they should have the same privileges as adults “Because kids drive their cars to school doesn't make it a school problem it is a community problem It's one we all have to work together on" Norton said Norton said he understands the frustration of homeowners who are treated discourteously by students School administrators will help protect private properly rights and students will be instructed to park in the driver training range from the first day of school he said Meanwhile local law enforcement officers plan to patrol the neighborhood surrounding campus Clegg said and llicy will issue tickets when violations are found Littering blocking driveways and parking near fire hydrants arc habits Smithfield officials hope to curb early in the school year Councilman Jeff Gittins appealed to students asking them to car-powalk or ride buses whenever possible until construction is completed Say dude you skating for advice? irt “Perfect" Recht said i ol “We need this to be like a Saturday morning event Like you just got up and are spending the day with your family doing Rep Jim Hansen run fra president noting Hatch tends to do better on the “Sunday gas bags" than other politicians referring to the various Sunday morning political talk shows Skipping to the war in Kosovo Hansen said the United States demonstrated it had definitive air superiority and that our bombers were very precise But he added people shouldn't be fooled by the political rhetoric about genocide and other atrocities that were happening there “We killed more people than the Kosovars or Serbs combined” he said Changing gears again Hansen took a shot at Utah environmentalists tornadoes a year since 1930 He said there have been 86 repents of tornadoes in the Beehive State since then “The conditions are mote conducive for tornadoes anywhere east of the Rockies” he said “With the mountains around here we rarely have them And if they do they don't do very much They're always F0 or less or at the (maximum) FI They’re usually out in remote areas and don’t touch down very long and don't do a heck of a lot of damage — maybe a fence or a tree gets uprooted and that sent of thing” Jensen explained that tornadoes form from thunderstorms He said Lake Powell will not he drained and 91 million acres of US Bureau of Land Management properly will not be set aside as wilderness as long as he is chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee “Wilderness isn’t what it's all cracked up to be" he said noting that there's no access to the land and no one to manage it “It just sits there” he added asking what would happen to your yard if you didn't do anything He vowed that a bill in the House to drain Lake Powell will go into his bottom drawer never to see daylight again And the worst thing for Utah according to Hansen would he “President Al Gore" He said he fought with llic vice president to keep Thiokol and Hill Air Force Base in Utah “He hardly fits the image of what we're doing” Hansen said “If he becomes president of the United States Calgary Alberta Canada's looking pretty darn gotkl to me" was on Aug 14 1968 — “About the same track but nowhere near as strong as this one” Jensen added that the 1968 tornado hit within five minutes of the time of day when Wednesday's tornado hit “The circulation was initially observed over the Salt Palace" he said “The tornaacross ZCMI do then moved and the University Club The windows in the upper floors of ZCMI were shattered “Same place same time within five minutes" While Wednesday's tornado was the strongest to hit a metropolitan area in Wednesday’s tornado that hit Salt Lake City with winds up to 137 mph was an F2 on a scale that compares the forces of tornadoes Utah it was not the strongest in the slate “We figure there was an F3 once Chcp-et- a Lake" north of Roosevelt on the south flank of the Uinta Mountains Alder said “Ironically it happened on Aug 11 the same day as this one did back in 1993” Both Alder and Jensen said this week in August seems to be a remarkable time for tornadoes in Utah It was the second one to hit downtown Salt Lake City Alder said The first one But they said twisters have hit during every month including during the winter “We have the thunderstorms but they need to be 43000 feet tall in order to get the tornado” he said “You need a big strong thunderstorm in order to get a torna- do” before" There's more to it than just throwing down concrete they said The design has to be friendly to skaters of all abilities the concrete has to have a smooth finish Not only skateboarders but skaters will be able to use the skate park The park also has to he something the city can live with for a while the skateboarders said since the only way to correct big flaws in concrete is to tear it out completely If Logan's skate park is built as a world-clas- s facility it could attract skaters — who would spend money here — from other cities and even other states Harder said The $ 80 (XX) bond approved by Logan residents Aug 3 allows the city to spend $9 on each square foot of the park at the Willow Park Sports Complex in southeastern Logan but that’s without landscaping and lighting No admission will be charged to get in the park Skateboarding has become really popular in recent years in Logan and Cache Valley Lowder said In general the spot reached a high point around 1987 Interest fell around 1990 but picked back up in 1993 The number of skateboarders here has probably doubled since 1993 Lowder estimated Russ Akina Logan's parks and recreation director said the city would like to select an architect’s bid before the year is over and be ready to break ground in the spring Within 60 days a geothermal analysis will be completed in the area where the park will go to determine where the water table is Akina said Meanwhile die skate group is defining qualifications it would like to see in a designer and contractor and putting together a list of candidates for foe jobs in-li- 1 20000-square-fo- ot |
