God forbid something happened to one of his children would he like someone to write about it? It just opens up a can of worms" Meanwhile Lee has defended his artistic right to portray historic events saying the families wrongly assume the film glamorizes violence “This film is not really about David Berkowitz” Lee said "This film does not : Latest film stirs controversy trace the mind of a serial killer This film is about the effect he had on the mental state of 8 million New Yorkers at the same time as one of the city's most brutal hot sum- mers" bor named Sam The killer who says he's a born-agai- n Christian declined an interview request from the AP but sent two letters with his views “I have absolutely nothing against Spike Lee” he wrote from the Sullivan Correctional Facility “While I do not like the idea of this movie coming out and so much of the ugly past having to resurface again as for Mr Lee I pray for him and his family and 1 wish them God's blessings in life” Lee is furious that Berkowitz’s opinions have even been sought by reporters “You would think he and I had switched places!” Lee said “When does his become a voice of moral reasoning? Why go to this crazy man and say 'What do you think of this movie?’” Son of Sam was only one cause for hysteria that summer On Aug 4 terrorist bombs linked to Puerto Rican nationalists went off in two midtown office buildings killing one man and hurting seven more A heat wave set four records with temperatures as high as 104 degrees And on July 13 at 9:34 blackout began followed by pm a widespread looting It was a formative time for Lee who spent the night of the blackout sitting on the front steps of his family’s home in Brooklyn He was 20 and had just finished his sophomore year at Morehouse College in Atlanta The city was still reeling from the effects of two years earlier Inflation was up and employment was down “I couldn’t find a job” said Lee whose “Do the Right Thing" also depicts a city neighborhood during a heat wave 25-ho- ur Berkowitz’s string of random shootings — which left six dead and four wounded most of them young women with long dark hair sitting in cars with their dates — unfolded over the course of a year By the time he struck his last four victims — on June 26 and July 31 of 1977 — police were conducting one of the largest manhunts in city history “N9 ONE IS SAFE!" a New York Post headline screamed Restaurant and night club business suffered Skittish brunettes bleached their hair or wore blonde wigs Berkowitz was arrested Aug 10 after police tracked down a parking ticket he got at the last murder scene He claimed he’d been ordered to kill by the dog of a neigh cy “I spent the whole summer running around New York with a Super-- 8 camera 1 got At the end of the summer 1 decided Tm just going to become a filmmaker'" and the spread of know ledge and information" As for key factors in America's progress they cite the Constitution free enterprise and free elections “People think the American way politically and economically is a remarkable achievement and it docs work" said Andrew Kohul director of the Pew Research Center But he added the poll indicates “technological and material success is undercut by the sense that somehow we have lost our way morally" Optimism extended to nearly all parts of society but women blacks and people with disabilities are among those who have gained the most according to those polled More than four out of five said the people in those categories are better off than they were in the 1950s and the movements for civil rights and oooooooooooooooodooooooooooooooboooi jLX FOOD & DRUG I ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo women's rights were widely viewed as two of the most positive social developments of the 4 fM Vi- - Movies Continued from Page 2 Champaign III for emotionally disturbed children said she hears children us young as 5 years old talk about seeing violent films “They haven’t seen ‘Bamhi’ but they've seen ‘Scream’ ‘Scream II' and ‘Chuckie' (the film “Child’s Play" about a vio- Kodak- Match the movies on video at 6 home" In a case certain to interject more healed debate on movie violence two teen cousins were con- ictcd this week in Los Angeles lor (lie stabbing of one's mother in an attack the hoys said was SAVE vs by the "Scream" mox ies Those movies are about a killer in a Grim Reaper costume w ho kills teens with a knife inspired points Rod SAVE MEip-Ro- M tip SAVE Don KODAK PREMIUM PROCESSING COUPON GOOD ONLY AT ALIERTWM EXPIRES KOOAK Wlto Double 3x5 Prints $299 ds The telephone poll of 1005 adults was taken Friday through Tuesday The maigin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage SAVE $3 Ep According to the poll women and older Americans were less likely to see a movie if they knew it contained violence Almost half of the women surveyed fell into the category compared to 30 percent of the men Two-thirof those over 65 said violence would probably keep them from seeing a movie The poll also found: — Whites 42 percent were more likely than blacks 28 percent tu say violent content might keep them away from a movie — Women were twice as likely as men to say hearing about nude scenes might keep them from seeing a particular movie People over 65 were three times as likely as those under 35 to stay away because of nudity — People who have gone to only a couple of movies this year were three times as likely to be troubled by movie violence as those who have seen more than 20 -- IsutkT dolh” she said “These kids don't go to the movies They lent Double 4x6 Prints 202 AQP i Any Size Unit Roll jxmav Ml isr a"-- Wth Hue mi Hmk ryi?
