home and said how difficult it was to find art for children's rooms in model homes Hearing that Fagan went to his room pulled out the construction paper and markers drew a picture and sold it to the designer for $5 “That was the start of my business” Fagan said 732-974- New employee Truman Mortgage welcomes Michael Jensen as its office administrator It's a business that can ebb and flow with the started his business at a younger age It £ was a niche the market that I found in invoices and to bring in for his business Cute Stuff Art Works Now at 18 already a veteran business owner Fagan has been named Future Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Association for the Dr Jeremy W Ellis his Logan — closed his first At 10 Fagan and I capitalized on JJ it than any of the previous four getting older he’s doing more work for teen-ager- s’ rooms Fagan has also found out at an early age that a businessman who rests on his laurels will do a lot more resting than working “Once you become known it doesn't mean you're going to be their only artist It’s amazing how quickly they forget about you You have to call them to let them know what new things you're doing" Fagan said For Fagan’s parents Wayne and Deborah their son’s job and the income that went with it presented some challenges They decided most of his art money would go toward college If he wanted money for dates and the like he could earn it by doing chores around the house They also had to make sure Fagan had the right priorities “We placed his work as second to his school and family life” Wayne Fagan said “He had to And a way to get all those things accomplished and not let his schoolwork go” Joshua Fagan says he plans to continue doing his art through college It will help him “enjoy some creative aspects of work instead of just taking whatever job I can And” er ed 787-940- Joins staff Grazing and grasshoppers both need attention Dana Brown has joined the staff at Silver Clippers Salon 444 12 N Main Logan shouldorganize into neighborhood groups These groups can then hire pesticide applicators lo spray the grasshopper infested areas This is much more effective than each individual trying to spray the grasshoppers Earlier this spring I reported there might be some help from the USDA Aphis and the Utah State Department of Agriculture in controlling grasshoppers I recently talked with the people who are running the grasshopper control program They indicated they are out of money and will only be helping control grasshoppers on lands that border federally owned land which means landowners in Cache County are pretty much on their own They also reported that insecticide sprays are the mast effective way lo control grasshoppers There are a number of insecticides available for control Pasture sense Many pastures are starting to show the effects of summer heat and grazing pressures Weeds have taken over many spots in the pastures A lot of the grass has gone to head and has matured Grass that has gone to head becomes rank and less palatable As a result the animals graze the low growing areas where the plants are more tender This results in over-grazi- Pastures with a lot of overmature grass should be clipped to get rid of the old grass and encourage animals to graze the entire area Prior to clipping it would be advisable to spray weeds such as thistle burdock teasel poison hemlock bindweed dock and others Herbicides recommended for these broadleaf weeds inpastures include 24-Banvel Stinger Curtail Tordon Escort and mixtures of the above herbicides The herbicide Weedmaster is a combination of 24-- D and Banvel and is an excellent combination for pasture weed control D The herbicides will all kill or Some of these herbicides while damage legumes safe to grazing animals have restrictions regarding how soon after application you can graze lactating dairy cows or beef to be slaughtered Always check the label for this information above-mention- ed It is not always necessary to have a mechanical power sprayer to apply herbicides Most small pastures can be spot sprayed with a three gallon hand or backpack sprayer Pastures with slow growth can be stimulated with an application of nitrogen fertilizer During the past three years USU Extension Service has been conducting fertilizer trials on pastures This research has shown a beneAt for splitting nitrogen fertilizer applications At least 50 pounds of actual nitrogen should be applied in early April mid- - to late-Mand in August Irrigation is also important Areas not getting sufficient water are now drying up An effort should be made to see that all areas get irrigated Rotation of pastures is also very important The ideal rotation program is an intensive grazing rotation program where animals are moved onto a small area that can be grazed off in 12 to 24 hours This way the animals have fresh pasture each day The next best system would be a four pasture rotation where animals are grazed for a week in each pasture and each pasture is allowed to regrow for about 21 days before being ay |
