For that is precisely the dilemma they face now in the wake of an article pilin' lished in the March 12 issue of Science The article is by Hubertus Fischer Martin Wahlen Jesse Smith Derek Mastroianni and Bruce Deck scientists at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in California The research team studied Antarctic ng gas-burni- ice cores to ascertain the relation between greenhouse gasses and climate in the past These ice cores excavated from far below Antarctica's surface are like time capsules Each layer contains tiny bubbles of air trapped in the ice when it first formed tens or even hundreds of thousands of years ago Based on the conventional scientific wisdom on global warming — advanced by Knauss Gore et al — periods of rising carbon dioxide levels should have been followed by increasing planetary temperatures But the Scrims team's examination of ice samples from three epochs — 13000 140000 and 240000 years ago (periods of transition between ice age and planetary warming) found that the complete opposite occurred First the Earth warmed up Then carbon dioxide levels rose It so happens that the Earth has been in a warming period since the last Ice Age ended roughly 10000 years ago And based on the findings of the Scripps scientists it is quite conceivable that recent rises in planetary temperature and carbon dioxide levels (if they have in fact occurred) are attributable almost entirely to forces of nature that control the planet's climate and almost not at all to human activity Yes this possibility must be profoundly disappointing to politicians like our vice president who believe that consumption of fossil fuels is a public evil unmatched by any other (save for maybe “urban sprawl") And it must be a real bummer for Knauss and other scientists who have so many lectures so many papers and so many research grants riding on global warming's authenticity But it should be a comfort to the vast majority of Americans who would bear the brunt of public policy — mandated by government driven by questionable science — aimed al mitigating the supposed role that human activity has in heating up the planet The only way to achieve such a public policy goal as I previously wrote is for the government to use its power to tax to regulate to artificially dampen demand for fossil fuels (by doubling tripling or even quadrupling the cost of gasoline and electricity) But it is hard for global-warmin- g alarmists to advocate such government policy in light of the recent scientific research contradicting their basic premise No Mr Gore no Dr Knauss the sky is not falling Othor viows Lawmakers U8 Thus anyone who challenges the global warming orthodoxy — that human consumption of fossil fuels has increased global-warmin- the debate on this environmental Your viow Knauss is among the legion of scientists who have much invested — in research grants lectures published papers (in scholarly journals such as Oceanography — in global wanning biles have been a daily fact of life for almost everyone who lives in this valley Here are a few simple suggestions: Synchronize your speed with others around you Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle ahead of you This is one of the few things over which you have complete control Be courteous and make way for others but don't be so polite that it puts others in danger Signal your intentions to turn by using — you guessed it! — your turn signal It’s an unpleasant fact that many aggressive drivers are young drivers who often have an unshakable belief in their own immortality To these young drivers we suggest reading the paper closely for a few months Idaho Stated ourna I 1 OCATELLO — A popular complaint among us common folk is no one in the hallowed halls of government hears us This complaint probably rings louder when we talk about the federal types who live within the confines of Washington DC Every once in a while however our unified voices break through the Beltway common sense barrier The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp has pulled back from its plan to impose a “Know Your Neighbor" rule on the nation's banking industry The rule would have called for banks to verify their customers' identities know where their money comes from and determine their normal pattern of transactions The intent was to help agencies involved in the war against drugs track money that was being laundered The public response to the proposal was anything but normal More than 23000 people sent comments to the FDIC — the majority clearly saying they wanted nothing to do with such a rule |
