Show Student's choice award goes to geology teacher Last year CEU students voted Michelle Fleck as their favorite female instructor of the year Upon accepting the award she says she just loves to teach and make her classes interesting 5SSSsa TLi by Amber Saupan editor In elementary school most students their teachers some even them mom Their views when change though they go to col Most college students tend to fear lege their professors usually making them out to be hideously mean creatures with no compassion for struggling slcepdcprived students However there is one professor who seems to be free this of breaking image Michelle Fleck is definitely not your typical boring professor and she is far from being an ornery intimidating or even unapproachable Professor Reck was given the student choice award for female teacherof 7 the year during the school year When talking with many students who have had the privilege of being in one of her classes it is not hard to see why she was chosen MI have her for math which if my worst subject But any time 1 have a problem she is always willing to give me some extra help" commented a student Another student said “1 really like her because she is very understanding I have had to bring my youngest child with me into my geology class when he didn’t have school She totally understood the situation because she has )oungcr children of her own” 1996-199- The main comments about Reck always evolved around “she is just an awesome teacher" If you have ever talked with Reck or have been in one of her classes you can tell that she is not a nativeof the area She moved to Price in 1984 from Tennessee with her husband She first became involved with the College of Eastern Utah when she enrolled in a computer class taught by Norm Larsen When he found out that Reck had a master's degree in geology he helped her get job at the college She started out grading papers for Larsen setting up the chemistry labs and growing the bacteria for the biology department The next step in her teaching career came when they needed help teaching the developmental math classes Laughing slightly Reck said “1 had never taught math before but it was interesting” She helped out the next two years Then when Don Burge took sabbatical leave Reck taught his classes finally in 1987 Reck was hired full time She teaches geology geography math and over the summer she taught freshman seminar Reck had never intended on becoming a teacher Her mother was an English teacher and her father's parents were both teachers Her grandmother who was a math teacher had always told Reck the she would be a teacher “I always said ‘No no no’ but now 1 am” she said 1 really enjoy it though it is not what intended on doing” Maybe it is the enjoyment that she has for teaching and her students that tends to make students like her classes more “I think 1 put a lot of time into leaching and I try not to make it bor I ing" Reck commented "I try to make people feel at ease because I know 1 have been in college classes where the teachers had kind of an arrogant attitude that really bothered me" Reck also tries to make the classes she teaches more interesting One student mentioned “We were taking a geology lest when Mrs Reck started passing out little Hershey's Cookies and Cream candy bars For an extra credit question we had to describe the candy bar like it was a rock It was a lot of fun and it kind of reminded me of grade school again” Reck said she likes doing small things like the candy bar activity which tends to take off the tension of test taking “It's fun when the teacher does fun things” she said Fleck really likes teaching college students "You don't have students who really don't want to be in class and there are only one or two who are ever disruptive in class” she mentioned She also likes having the older students in her classes because they typically have a really good attitude about learning being in school and they study I Reck is currently in a program to get her doctorate degree which she will graduate in 2001 from the University of Wyoming She plans on continuing Students with an international perspective by Jeremiah Stettler staff writer On a yearly basis hundreds of college and university students from all reaches of the globe leave behind the comforts of their native cultures oftiimes even their own languages in order to enroll in foreign educational facilities As a result these stbdents spend months quarters or even years pursuing their studies in lands far from home Their hopes and desires may vary as do their ethnic backgrounds but overall the International Student Program has attracted many students to the College of Eastern Utah to experience the American way of life The International Student Program was first established at CEU in 1988 by Brad King It was designed to provide ethnic diversity to the student population It has however contributed much more to the college scene than simply ethnic diversity Jane Johnson direc tor of international student services says that by opening ourselves up to this intcrculiural experience we open our minds to a greater appreciation of the differences and qualities which make our culture unique The foundational work in instituting this program has been completed but beneath the outer shell of recruitment and enrollment there lies an unseen program of student integration provided by the CEU International Services Department Programs such as ESL (English as a Second Language) and intercultural communication have been developed to assist students who would like to improve their proficiency in the English language ESL is a general study of the English language with courses such as listening and speaking reading vocabulary and writing grammar Each of these classes is based on an intermediate level to accommodate for the high languagfcapabililyofourintcmational students on campus today The communication course is foconversation cused on These programs are available to all foreign students who would like Eninter-cultur- al one-on-o- glish tutoring Currently 34 international students arc enrolled at CEU 20 of whom come from Japan Eleven other countries are represented ranging from Mongolia to Brazil Each of these students has a variety of reasons for attending CEU Shiho Ilarada a student from Japan says (hat financially CEU was the best buy on the market but that it was the emphasis placed on traditional family values which attracted her to Price Many international students are indeed drawn to CEU due to the financial benefits but as Johnson explains others are attracted to the rural community or to the basketball program while the proximity of five national parks and great ski slopes appeal to others Many international students encounter difficulties however in regards to public transportation especially in the Price area The majority of these students come to CEU without planning to drive a personal vehicle hut soon find it a necessity in the American world Many students resort to night classes at the high school where they can complete theirdriver'seducation course requirements Overall the international student program has proved to be an overwhelming success at CEU both for American and international students Johnson says that in general each group tends to have a very positive experience but adds “It docs help a lot if American students show interest in themand befriend them They really want to make friends with American students and have experiences to see what American life is like” off-camp- teaching at CEU “I really like the college I think it's a good school and the faculty are great” As far as this year goes Reck is really excited “So far my classes have been great their big but they' ve been good” She really does enjoy teaching and as long as she does it is guaranteed that students will continue to love having her for a professor Hunger banquet planned by Jill Edwarda staff writer The College of Eastern Utah is host-in- g a Hunger Banquet sponsored by the SUN Center the volunteer and service center on campus Its purpose is to educate the community on the problem of hunger in the area At the Hunger Banquet people have an opportunity to team in a unique way what hunger is how large the problem extends how many local families suffer
