Show Ji’wn B3TT2E141 Two new VISTA volunteers at CEU Utah colleges' faculty being "de-tenure- d" excellence at the college level requires that faculty members' freedom be protected through the tenure process" states AFT Director Paul Henderson in a report recently produced tenure Utah practices college regarding "Attracting quality faculty who are wholly committed to the profession requires that more faculty at Utah colleges be placed on a tenure track as opposed to the current practice of hiring an excessive amount of adjuncts It also may require the reduction of probationary years for tenure to be achieved” The report Tenure Practices in Utah Colleges: Institutional Flexibility Versus Quality Instruction claims that the hiring abuse of a contingent faculty (adjuncts) and the long period of probation for tenure may hurt the quality of education offered at colleges Approximately 77 percent of the FTE (full time enrollment) student hours at Utah colleges are taught by faculty Salt Lake Community College policy is quoted in the report as follows: Academic freedom is fundamental to the protection of the rights of the faculty members in teaching and of the students in learning ( emphasis added) While this statement appears to be right on target the report shows SLCC with only 1 8 percent of the FTE faculty being tenured Using data from “peer institutions" identified by the Utah Board of Regents for the purpose of comparison the report shows that an average probationary period for tenure at these out of state institutions is about three years Utah colleges are all at seven years which is the maximum allowed by policy does not prohibit institutions from setting the probationary period at three years Individuals desiring a copy of the original (he SUN (Serving Utah Network) Center in the College of Eastern Utah's TAPS Building Rik Vasquez and Jill Piacitelli both natives of the Price area are the new VISTA faces at CEU The center is in charge of arranging ways for the students to make service an active part of their college experience "There seems to be a stereotype with this generation that we arc and not interested in the needs of others or our communities needs We want to develop civic responsibility and leadership in this generation because the resources arc rich" says Piacitelli one of the two new VISTA coordinators She is a longtime resident of Price but has been away for some time She returned in September from a year and a half spent in the Oklahoma City area as Two self-servi- an LDS missionary "Even while I was a missionary I would get letters from my little sister Nanci who was volunteering through the SUN Center as a hospice worker : and doing some projects with the elderly It sounded like a very worthwhile and productive thing To me this job is a dream I get to stay dose to my family and devote my working time to helping d others There is no like the automatic one that comes when you serve in any way" Another project that the VISTA's arc excited about is the opportunity to develop some service learning curriculum at CEU Service learning simply put is getting credit fordasscs through giving service in the area in which you arc feel-goo- learning For example at the University of Utah service learning includes accounting students doing legal work for nonprofit organizations chemistry students analyzing and collecting lead metal content samples at community sites or even psychology students becoming a for the quarter allowing them to observe the development of children throughout their time together Vasquez feels that service learning must become a part of CEU "It's something everyone needs to experience" Piacitelli says ‘To me this is the way to mcn-tortut- or learn We are killing several birds with one stone the needs of the community development of civic responsibility and love of service in the students with hands-o- n learning It is a wonderful concept" life-styl- Tenured
