Show :Tee 5996 Just legalize it ay Mike Zahller staff writer ll has already happened in California and Arizona so why not on j national level? What am I referring to you ask? The legalization of Hemp for medical purposes It is evidently apparent that Hemp is becoming a major political issue but in a society that advocates freedom of action one may ponder why exactly Hemp hasn't been legalized on a national level A few reasons come to mind namely that Hemp is a drug and that its use can cause a variety of health follow the trend of California and Arizona “Hemp plantations have routinely produced intensive biomass yields throughout the world throughout recorded history Hemp is not plagued by the economic and environmental pitfall associated with other energy farming candidate crops A hemp energy farm would require far less use of fossil fuels (more efficient harvesting machinery no need for mechanical weeding little or no chemical fertilizers no pesticides etc) to produce biomass crop" Basically speaking problems which include nausea and headaches While this may be true it is necessary to examine the history behind Hemp to understand why it became an illegal substance and why it continues to be that way Around the 1 920s I iarry J Anslinger headed up the newly found Federal Bureau of Narcotics During his reign Anslinger spread horrifying stories of rape and murder by “Negroes Mexicans and :o he prohibited Eventually it was but is Hemp really that evil? Docs it have such a powerful influence over individuals that it leads benefits whatsoever? I believe it docs For starters Hemp can be used as replacement for fossil fuels uch as chemical fertilizers pesticides and the petroleum we use in the gas we put in our cars Also Hemp oils and fatty acids can be used to improve the health of individuals Finally the protein from Hemp can be used to feed the world Fossil fuel consumption has led to numerous problems around the world Just look at the recent Gulf War not to prevent the senseless killing of Kuwaiiccs hut to stop Sadaam Hussein from increasing the price of oil to the United Stales Also in 1993 HI 1 million poundsof incesticides were used in agriculture fields Imagine w hat that can do to the air we breathe I leinp can he used to replace the use of fossil fuels w hich means that it can reduce the conflicts that arise over the decreasing amount limit the use of pesticides of fossil fuel resources and it can As the book entitled 'I hr Emperor Wrarx no Clothes tells us by Cade Anderson staff writer ' elections President ( 'linton proposed a crack Recently in the down on “the ever rising drug problems with America's teens today" In order to address this problem the president has to appease fanatics that demand something be done One of the solutions to the "problem" is mandatory drug testing before being able to receive a driver's license This means that any one under the age of sixteen (here in Utah) is subject to a urinalysis for any drugs or alcohol in the person's system Now does this sound completely ridiculous to anybody but me? Throughout President Clinton's career he has maintained a fairly neutral standpoint on marijuana and the drug war To my knowledge the President has not made any of the aggressive maneuvers that former President Bush's campaign managed to pull off Not only have they wasted countless man and law enforcement d lax hours but they have also wasted millions of the payers money Personally I think we should take a few tips from the Dutch who have decriminalized the “soft” drugs What arc “soft” drugs? They include not only marijuana and hashish but also tobacco and alcohol By the term decriminalized I mean that these “soft" drugs are tolerated to a point A person is allowed by law to carry up to thirty grams (that's two grams over an ounce!) of marijuana or hashish on their person at any given time to the right-win- economic and environmental impacts accrued with the production of fossil fuels Pretty neat huh? Hemp can also be used and is used in California and Arizona as a natural means to improve health because it contains essential oils and fatly acids Research done by William Eidlcman M D UCL A and R Lee Hamilton Ed D Ph D medical researcher-biochemialso at UCLA led to the conclusion that the oils from Hemp “support the immune system and guard against viral and other insults to the immune system" In addition Dr Joanna Budwig nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since 1979 used the fatty acid in Hemp to “successfully treat 'terminal' cancer patients as well as those suffering from cardiovascular disease glandular atrophy gall stones kidney degeneration acne dry skin menstral problems and immune deficiency" Hemp has numerous health impacts which have only been recognized by two stales: California and Arizona My question is when is the United Slates going to wake up to the fact that Hemp is a good thing and that it shoulJ be legalized? Not only does it reduce fossil fuel consump- st before driving? Whiz-Qui- z g neo-fasci- hard-earne- st that grows almost anywhere even in diverse conditions For this reason alone Hemp is a perfect candidate for a natural food source Not only docs it avoid the use of pesticides but it contains a seed protein that is healthy I low many times have we seen commercials in which hoards of Dies swarm over young children that are dying due to a lack of protein? And how many times do we ask ourselves "what can we do?" The answer is Hemp The Emperor Wears no Clothes notes that “by itself widespread use of Hemp seed food protein could save many of the world's children now dying of protein starvation! An estimated 60 percent of all children bom in million a year) will die this way Third World countries (about five of before reaching years age” An example of Hemp being used as a food source came in the 19th century when Australians survived two prolonged famines using almost nothing except Hemp seeds for protein and I lemp leaves for roughage It’s time to legalize 1 2-- Orientals" who were supposedly under the influence of (he terrible drug marijuana (or as it was spelled during his time marihuana) For (his reason Anslinger printed stories in the newspapers that led 10 a public belief that Hemp was such an evil drug and that it ought '0 rape and murder? And in this mass hysteria over the negative impacts of Hemp is there any bright side? Docs Hemp have any tion and improve (he health of individuals but it can also be used as a means of feeding the world The beautiful thing about I lemp is that it is a naturally hearty plant The "hard" drugs however arc not tolerated in public places The government of Holland has a program for people addicted to such drugs us heroine crack mcthamphctamincs and most narcotics Believe it or not (he government actually supplies these people with the drug of their choice in addition to giving them the drugs they supply a park or rehab to do them in As a result of this "radical" program I lolland and particularly Amsterdam enjoy phenomenally low crime and violence rates With no reason to go out and rob a house or mug a dealer to get their next fix the Dutch enjoy a life where they don't have to worry about people pushing drugs on their children or themselves As a side note the Dutch also enjoy life without guns I sincerely hope that the proposal of mandatory drug testing is just another empty campaign promise Even though I am tom between the control of hard drugs and the gross infringement of hundreds of thousands of teenagers God- - given rights I do not think that drug testing is the answer Not only would the undesirable “drug” element be denied the right to drive but your children or even you (yes you! Do you think it would be to hard to extend the proposal to all drivers' licenses 7” Closet smokers unite! Write and tell your president what a joke this proposal is Stand up for yourself and your rights! Remember to tell people with nothing to rebel against all you have is bored rebels Hemp Many politicians delay the legalizing of Hemp because they believe that it leads to nausea and headaches Some even argue that it leads to violence because it's addictive My response is don't these things occur with the use of alcohol and cigarettes Doesn't over-us- e of alcohol lead to nausea and headaches along with other major health problems? Don't cigarettes lead to lung cancer and problems with female pregnancy? Isn't it true that both cigarettes and alcohol can be very addictive substances and isn't it true that the use of alcohol can lead to drunk driving and an overall impairment of an individuals' ability? The answer to all these questions is a resounding yes yet both arc legal! Laws have been established to decrease the negative impacts of both cigarettes and alcohol so why can't they be also applied to Hemp? The time has come for Americans to put aside their erroneous notions concerning I lemp and accept the fact that I lemp is good It is rime for our politicians to put aside their g motives and realize that Hemp can benefit this country both economically and environmentally in far reaching ways I guess what it comes down to is that it is time to legalize Hemp profit-makin- Freshman seminar class is us eless byZach Westerfleld staff writer ‘ 6ne of the most intriguing things that I have done at CbU is to take the freshmen seminar class This class is one that is required for all freshman to take whether they want to or not While I understand there being certain classes that are mandatory and required I have no idea why all freshmen are required to take such a meaningless class In my opinion this class is a waste of time and money for everyone who take the class The class eats up two- - credit hours and keeps people from taking the classes that they want or need There are many reasons why 1 think that freshmen seminar is useless The first thing is that the material covered In ' freshmen seminar is very remedial' For example someof the topics a person supposedly learns are how to take notes ' how to take tests how to study and how to use the library i While I agree that these are important and essential skills I don't believe that they have any place at a college or (university 'These are skills that should be learned at the (i ’middle or high school level5 To tne It is an insult that this college thinks that it takesan entire quarter to teach these J skills to its students V j I think that it is iinderslandabiethat everyone' learn to use ' p the tools that are available to iheroiBut! think' that this V 'could be accomplished during one day maybe the first day ' ' 'l If l J iJ f t ' r ' t - ? ’ j- r'’’’ ‘V Vn — ' efiiahmanamlnarpB3: — J r " |
