Fall Speech Scrimmage held September 22 and 23 “The U of U tournament is considered one of the best in the nation and is a good barometer of how we will do in the rest of the year" Warren said “We undoubtedly had some of the best talent among the 22 colleges and universities that participated" Santa Rosa Calif native Joe Carver received top honors for CEU with a trophy for “Second-beSpeaker" in for the enrollment growth that is anticipated at both CEU's Price campus and the San Juan Center in Blanding "When we start adding significant numbers of people to our student body we simply must add more facility members and instructional equipment to maintain quality Otherwise the classes quickly and the stubecome dents are learning skills on obsolete or defective equipment" he over-crowd- ed said Petersen's request and other budget issues which will affect Utah's nine colleges and universi ties will be considered by the Board of Regents when their next meeting is held on the CEU campus in Price on October 26 During first session the Board will consider Initiative A a Slate Tax Initiative which proposes the elimination of sales tax on food items The board intends to oppose the action because the elimination of a major source of tax revenue could significantly reduce State funding for education In this session the regents will also consider several items important to CEU according to Petersen "We will make a special presentation to the Board in the fust session "he said One of the most important issues the Board will consider as they formulate the 1990-9-1 budget is increased funding for the Stale's higher educational institutions Much of the increase requested in the Regents budget will be used to provide for the 4000 additional students the Board projects will be added to college and university enrollment in the State next year The Board's Planning and Facilities Committee will hear a proposal for a master plan to develop CEU's San Juan Center the first ever proposed for the Campus “We have over 400 students enrolled in classes there" Petersen said “Money for the San Juan Center is an important part of CEU's budget request" he added CEU representatives will also request additional funds for the colmuseum "We lege's doubled the museum's space last e funding inyear with a crease from the State" Petersen said "We are asking for an increase of $100j000 per year in the museum's regular operating bud pie-histor- ic one-tim- get" The Institutional Council will meet in CEU's museum after lunch which will also be held there The regents will conclude the day with their regular monthly meeting at 2 pm In this session they will consider matters which will affect all of Utah's colleges and universities including next year's budget request After hearing from each of the nine institutions in the Utah System of Higher Education the regents will formulate their own budget request to be presented to the Utah Legislature in January All sessions of the Regents' meetings are open to the public and Petersen encourages students to attend “It is a good opportunity for them to see what happens at these meetings" he said pre-histor- ic h Stilson-nint- h
