Show CEU president urges students vote against Initiative A Nov 6 by CEU President Michael A Petersen guest editorialist I want to alert you to an extremely important issue that will be on the ballot during the November election Initiative A proposes to remove the sales tax on food If it passes approximately $114 million in revenue will be lost by the state and local governments starting next year If Utah's economy doesn't grow next year Initiative A could cut $31 million from our nine state colleges and universities The Utah Student's Association is against Initiative A So is the State Board of Regents These and other organizations who support higher education in the state believe that removing the sales tax on food without having revenues to replace lost funding would be extremely harmful for our states' colleges and universities The USA's slogan may say it best "Don't Eat Our Future!" Among the reasons that the Regents and USA oppose Initiative A is that enrollment in Utah colleges and universities is expanding rapidly for the next decade Enrollment growth is now moving from our high schools to higher education For the next decade we will need to expand our enrollment each year by the equivalent of at least a college the size of Southern Utah State University Next year alone we expect 4000 more students than we have this year More and more adults arc also reluming to college for retraining If Initiative A passes and there is no growth in our economy next year funding could be lost for as many as 9700 students That's like not funding all the students now at CEU Dixie and Snow colleges Fortunately Utah's economy is expanding If recent international events and the threat of recession don't destroy an optimistic revenue forecast higher education could receive enough money to offset part of the cut The best scenario is a $6 million cut Even that would eliminate funding for 3900 students A major reason that there is so much opposition to Initiative A is that it doesn't provide a mechanism to fix the damage it causes Although many of us agree that it would be better to not tax food sales Initiative A doesn't provide for different sources of revenue to replace the money that higher education and other important state and local programs need No one knows what will happen when the legislature meets this winter but the governor has stated that he will recommend cutting programs rather than raise other taxes to replace the sales lax on food Higher education is the key to our state's future Utah is First in the nation in the percent of its young people who go to college Our population of young people is growing not shrinking like most of the country This gives us a great potential to attract new businesses and better economic opportunities in the future But we must invest in higher cducaiion--an- d your future-- in order to be prepared to meet the challenges we will face individually and as a state How can you make a difference on this issue? Make sure you arc registered to vote Study the issues surrounding Initiative A carefully Then make sure you vole this year on Tuesday Nov 6 Involvement is the key to success at CEU this year by Brad Gwyther staff writer OK so this is your third week of school and you are probably wondering what exactly is going on this year Well not only am I and my almighty computer keyboard going to tell you but will also shed some light on how to make it happen Of course these items arc listed in random order so don't get upset if you weren't listed First it's nothing personal!
