Poetry is becoming more popular as shown by the rising number of those writing prose The College of Eastern Utah is well represented In this area by two teachers whose material has been published by such well read magazines as the Montana Review Jan Minich and Nancy Takacs both started writing poetry around the age of 1 due to instructors in English and creative writing classes who liked their work and encouraged them to continue Minich who wu majoring in biology changed to English and enrolled at the University of Iowa a strong arts college known for its knowledgeable and published students There he met Takacs who was working towards her master of fine arts degree They later married gave me a love for writing because of its people and it was neat finding someone with the same exact interest as me" Takacs The university said Both are well on their way to becoming established poets Takacs recently won The Nation Discovery Award" a national poetry contest with three other winners defeating 15000 contestants and wu flown back East to read her poetry before a New York audience "I received the call at midnight" she said "Idont think I slept for two nights after that" Minich hu been working on a chapbook a small book of poems and was informed on his birthday that Owl Creek Press would publish it Even with all this success both agree it is not easy to write poetry "I get an idea and get it down" Minich said "What takes a long time is working and discovering what the poem wants to say It’salotofwork1 sometimes put 60-8- hours into a 0 25-li- ne poem" "I try to force myself to write every day" Takacs said "Even if Pm not inspired and sometimes something good comes out of it If Idont like it I file it until later Maybe even for a year Then I might try rewriting it Most of it is revision Poetry sometimes 'just happens’ but not often and I’m always seeing something after IVe written it that I want to change" Poetry is more to them than getting into a magazine "You write for yourself" Minich added "A writer whodoesnY get published and quits is not a writer" Minich and Takacs bofh commented on how poetry affects their lives Toucan really see your growth" Takacs said "It’s like " challenging yourself constantly know when "IPs thrilling you someone wants to read my poems When I'm saying something that someone wants to spend time reading Poetry helps to understand more about your life" Minich said "And that can sometimes be scary That’s why so many contemporary poets have committed suicide" As for where and what they write Minich finds writing on wildernesa He usee trips the most ideal landscape and environment issues and ideas to reflect what he wants to say Takacs hu a writing room at home decorated old-fuhion- ed complete with a set of toy International farm trucks She feels her poems about people are usually her best and most liked In the future Takacs is hoping to publish a book and Minich wants to keep the feeling he gets from writing that he's said something in the best continuwJ on pass 7 dance program In addition CEU would have to cut another 50 to 660 thousand from the budget "We literally would be looking at major dismantling of the key programs of this college" President Petersen said "You could not maintain a quality college operation with cuts of that magnitude" President Petersen added that the governor’s budget which would require the 6206 million increase to fund in total is still not the bestCEU could hope for but it is a starting point Increases in funding would allow CEU to have not only the money that the legislature promised this year but about a five percent increase Then increases of six to eight percent in salaries could be made to faculty members two to three percent increases to staff members and a e English position could be full-tim- filled Another proposal to the legislature that would be funded if the tax increase were tebe approved is a tuition grant program which would allow the scholarship program at CEU to be increased by about 675 thousand This would be a tremendous advantage to us in going after more students” Petersen said In addition private corporations and other individuals are being asked to get matching money equal to the 675 thousand which would give CEU about 6150 thousand to provide scholarships for students next year he added (Continued on page 2) |
