Show SENATOR QUAY DEAD one of the most noted men of the day passes away colonel matthew stanley quay senior senator from pennsylvania died peaceful at beaber pa on fuday afternoon after an illness which had been more or less persist ent for the ast year which took a turn for the worse ten days ago and which the doctors diagnosed as chronic gastritis matthew stanley quay was born at billsbury dillsbury Dills bury pa september 30 1833 he attended the public schools and jet terson college graduating in 1850 and in 1854 was admitted to the bar he was colonel of the one hundred and thirty fourth pennsylvania volunteers and military secretary to the gov arnor of pennsylvania during the civil war from 1865 to quay was a member of the state legislature and 1872 he was elected secretary of the commonwealth a position which he held tor six years he was recorder of philadelphia and chairman of tho republican state committee during the following year and in 1879 was again elected secretary ot the corn mon wealth holding the office for three years he was delegate to the republican national convention in 1872 and and also from 1880 to 1892 the last state office which he held was that of state treasurer ier in 1885 he was elected united states senator from pennsylvania by the re publican party and took his seat march 4 1887 he vas chairman oi the republican national committee in 1888 quay was united senator tor two terms 1887 to 1899 in the latter year he was tried for misappropriation ot the public funds and acquitted april 21 1899 and on the same day he was appointed united states senator by governor stone of pennsylvania it Is announced by the family of senator quay that carrying out the senators dang request there would be no ostentation in connection with the funteral this compels the refusal of a request by the masons for a masonic funeral |
