OCR Text rew NEW IDEA IN SUBMARINE BOAT calcium carbide es gas to raise it from the bottom A new use for calcium carbide Is tor for raising and dialing sul ing a submarine boat in germany the boat is supplied with an ardi nary gas generator and a water tank the upper part of which is connected vath ohp gas reservoir of the general or the tank and the generator have pipes at the bottom opening into the sea water the upper parts have ver p pes pos for the escape of the gas it if the reservoirs irs the tank and the reservoir of the generator are filled with water the boat sinks after the introduction of a carbide cartridge into the gas generator an immense quantity of gas is formed at once which forces the water through the lower pipe into the ea after open ing the cod in the connecting pipe the gas enters the tank and fills it by forcing out the water the boat now rises to the surface remaining there until the gas is al lowed to escape from both reservoirs which causes them to be again filled by sea water it if the boat has sunk deeper than desired the introduction of a carbide cartridge into the generator will make the boat rise to the proper level the apparatus Is quite simple and works reliably doing away with air and water pumps consular reports
