PLOT HATCHED IN JAIL blac blackmailers km ailers of northern on trial at helena the tal ing of testimony in the case of isaac gravelle charged with send ing letters to the northern pacific of ficiala demanding money for lm has begun at helena mont among the witnesses was the warden of the penitentiary jack conley who testified to gravelle having served two terms in n the penitentiary the theory of the prosecution Is that three of the threatening letters re calved by the railroad company were written in the penitentiary by the cell mate of gravelle a man named har itar vey whitton who Is serving an eighty year sentence for second degree mur der i conley identified two of the threat ening letters as being written in the 0 handwriting of whitton the paper they were written on is sent out by a i school of correspond correspondence enc e and was wash identified by a peculiar water mark one of the letters identified was ad dressed to the board of directors of the road and was dated july 16 1903 the day gravelle was released from prison it was the first malting making a de gnand for 25 the second was without date and directed the railroad company how to deliver the money and what the de nominations were to be there are eighty witnesses in attendance and the trial will consume about two weeks
