Show rl flochos IN THE SOUTH high ater W ter is st 11 II causing much uncas uneas ness in M ippi with a tremendous crash the lebee 1 four miles south ot of greenville miss gave way w ay at 11 0 clod friday and great quantities or water are now pouting through a foot crevasse rapidly flooding the most fertile land in afie the great yazoo delta major sears in charge of the government engi neer s office at this point says it Is the vort vior t break ever experienced on the miss side and he states that tha the wl ole delta from greenville to vicksburg will be flooded this is the first break reported on the mis Ms sippi side during the present high water A new orleans dispatch says in terest in the flood situation there cen con in the breal at hamella forty miles aboe abon e the city and the dasas trous arous crevasse cle cie vasse reported south of greenville cotton men felt especial ly concerned with i aspect to the latter while this break doubtless will cause a fall in the river in the vicinity of greenville Gle Gip enville and for a considerable dis tance south the water which goes through mut mu t inevitably return to the mississippi through the yazoo thus prolonging the period of high water south of that point the crevasse is in the heart of one of the r chest sugar districts in louis louisi ana it if it should get beyond control many many valuable plantations doubtless will be covered water in a few days the texas pacific and south pacific roads have not thus far been affe ted but tro ible is likely to occur it if the crevasse is i ot closed it is ex petted at the illinois central office that agh traffic over the valley alley road will be suspended as a result of the disaster the belief that the high water levee lei was cut in order to relieve other sections Is strong and any attempt to repeat the action is likely to be fol followed loved by blood shed |
