survey proves Idaho's (arm crisis has deepened during the past year hut they disagree ever what should he done to ease the problem Evans satd last week a US Agriculture Department survey of 2500 farmers this spring shows "a significant and serious amount of deterioration in the financial health of our farmers and ranchers” The survey indicated 171 percent ol Idaho's farmers — 4290 farmers — are suffering from "extreme financial problems " compared to Family 4-1- percent "At a 70 percent debtasset ratio a farmer fait delinquent on both principal and may interest” Evans said "He is then on an almost Irreversible course out of farming within a couple of years” The governor said the crisis deepened because of low commodity prices last year’s grasshopper infestation droughts and an early freese (hat killed many potatoes of salvage those situations" said Geary head the state's largest farm organisation "We In the Farm Bureau have been proposing a program Maybe the Legislature could encourage this type pf program” he said "The farmers are saying less government is the best way the Legislature could help farmers” he laid "The Legislature could get rid of the ruies regulations and restrictions on Evans assailed the Idaho Legislature tor falling to ease the burden on Idaho farmers by Increasing state farm spending and subsidies "The situation must be faced because of the serious Implications for our rural areal and our number-onindustry” said the Democratic attitude of governor “But the head-ithe Legislature ignored the problem and e the-san- n d potential solutions” But Idaho Farm Bureau President Tom Geary of Burley said there was little the Legislature could do to help farmers it's difficult for me to see how the stste Legislature could have provided money to farmers" Geary added he would like the Legislature to See Idaho on page 95 club stacks up safety awards 1 omlhrcys work as a team to help tench loenl residents Iwu to keep safe nnd sound er F done more than their fair share to make sure local residents know how to Slav safe The Woodbreys are more than a Club family They are also a called the Wise Owls Safety Club And as a club the Woodbreys have steadily accumulated a stack of d contacted elementary schools around the county' and presented McGruff programs In those schools They gave the coloring books to the and kindergarten 4-- first grade children and did reminder presentations during the school year They helped establish Hi McGruff Houses in the county The Woodbreys also worked to implement the Green Tennant program sponsored by General Motors in 16 Cache County' and two Logan City elementary schools Each school was given a green pennant to fly on the flagpole when the student body goes 30 days without a student-causeaccident Mrs Woodbrey said if an accident occurs the pennant is taken down for 90 dayw to remind everyone to be more careful In recognition of their efforts the Woodbreys received plaques and two shares of GM stock Robert 11 won ore of the club's most recent awards with a water program presented to children at Mells title Elementary Robert showed an animated him that taught safety around ditches — he thought the program w as especially important in the spring when the water was high Robert also obtained coloring books sbeut the film to give the students The Woodbreys decided it state and national and by the National Safety Council All have been given in recognition of the safety projects family members have organized together or individually the past few years For instance three of the 16 Woodbrey children have been awarded National Scholarships Mrs Woodbrey said oldest son Yean 19 has used his scholarship The ones for Kelly 16 and Kinsberli 17 will be held until the girls are ready to go to college Having three safety scholarships awarded to three members of one family is quite an accomplishment “They only award eight scholarships it the whole country each year" Mrs Woodbrey explained The Woodbrey s have had a lot of fan in their dub but say they lake their safety projects very seriously One project the children tackled involved writing a proposal and submitting it to Utah State UniversiAs a result the club ty Extension received two grants totaling 6250 The children used the money to purchase Me Graff House signs and coloring books McGruff is a
