Show 2-- Herald Journal Logan Utah Sunday June The 8 1986 The circus (elephants et al) comes to town usu Continued from By Lynnette staff writer families that travel with the circus There is one man whose only job is to provide water for the animals and circus employees Most of the performers and crew travel with their families many are second or third generation circus families Murillo is the son of a clown and a trapeze artist He was born 35 years ago backstage at a circus in Mexico City and said he has been with circuses ever since doing everything except working with animals Byrd said people think it must be a difficult life raising children on the road but she contends it is a great life Byrd admitted though it is impossible at times to remember what cities you have been in for longer then a week Carson & Barnes is the only circus that still travels every day usually leaving for the next stop at about 5 am she said The kids have a new backyard every day they get to see a lot and grow up in a very close community Byrd said The Carson Barnes Circus was founded by Byrd's grandfather Obert Miller and claims the distinction of being the only circus in this country to be owned for over 50 years by one family Byrd said her grandfather started his own wagon show with a dog a monkey and two ponies traveling around Oklahoma and Texas From those humble beginnings the show has grown to include over 200 employees lions tigers llamas hippos a giraffe a rhinocerous and a preponderance of performing pachyderms Though the snow keeps changing some Clings about this circus will always be the same — the sounds the smells the popcorn peanuts and candied apples the tent and the smiles and excitment of children seeing a circus like the circuses their Fryer Carson & Barnes Circus one of only three circuses in the country still performing in a traditional circus tent came to town Saturday providing entertainment for a crowd of Cache Valley residents The shows may have been scheduled for 2 and 7 pm but there was plenty of entertainment for the many spectators that gathered Saturday morning to watch the animals being unloaded and the big top being raised Stakes were driven into the ground and the circus tent was laid out quickly through the teamwork of a large crew The crowd then watched a demonstration of elephant power Four of the circus’ 24 elephants were led into the tent by their trainers to pull the huge tent support poles into place Coaxed by their trainer's commands of "move up over back up" the harnessed elephants effortlessly pulled the poles and raised the tent killing time between commands by dangling their trunks in search of more grass to eat The elephants were probably the most popular attraction at the circus Trainer Ken Hardy who has been with the circus for two years was working with Suzy a Asian elephant Hardy said it doesn’t take long to be able to recognize each elephant and know them all by name “They all have different personalities just like kids” Hardy said Barbara Byrd who shares ownership of the circus with her husband and said "My father is a firm Sarents that the kids remember seeing the circus set up longer than they’ll remember the show" There are other circuses but most of them perform in large arenas or stadiums "You don't get to smell the elephants" Byrd said thinking or they touch our emotions 'Hamlet' the paintings of Monet and the music of Eubie Blake do not have practical application but the world would be poorer without them" The speaker aaid that humanists and social scientists must participate with scientists and engineers in arriving at decisions that transcend dis- whole organism is dependent upon the health and welfare of the individual parts “In a word" said Felczar "you who have majored in the humanities and social sciences can assess the changes that your classmates in science engineering and technology will bring about We need your assessments to understand all those changes We need you to remind us to take a global view when it comes to new breakthroughs “This in turn may give us a better chance to diffuse the social and political discontents that threaten us” Pelczar concluded his talk saying that answers wouldn't be easy but that the search for answers was the best hope "Your new degree gives you wider opportunities" he said "With it comes the responsibility to contribute doctor of science degree from Joining him as honorary degree recipients were William E Bell an Arizona inventor and industrialist Dr Homer Ellsworth a Salt Lake physician who helped start the American College of and Obstetricians and Gordon Gynecologists work” Keeping a group of animals equipment and over 200 people performing and on the road for more than 250 days each year with two or three shows a day is no small task Byrd said yet things usually run very Pedro Haudtey son of Tullie Haudley of Logan can hardly believe his eyes Death defying feats performed by circus animals like the mountain lion right were all part of the fun at the Carson & Barnes Circus in Logan Saturday provision for “no prior turn of the century censorship" open press cover- age to an
