Show m. m i Letters to the Editor J Dear Editor In the Messenger of Oct 12 it Is heart warming to read of the restoration of the old homes in Manti ManU and the listing listing listing list list- ing of these for nominations to the National Register of onus onus- Historic Historic His His- Places My sincere congratulations to the Parkers and Miss Deakin Deak- Deak in and all others who are making making making mak mak- ing the necessary restoration possible It Is also sad to see the neglect and careless maintenance maintenance maintenance ance of some of the old homes that were once kept up so beautifully beau beau- by their first owners Your home Is your castle Grandfather always said and the kind of a person you are Is reflected In the appearance of your home be it large or small costly or meager I recently passed a few of the homes that were once showplaces showplaces show showplaces places surrounded by trees from the forest swinging gates that bid one welcome and many other splendid features that day I saw much neglect clutter clutter clutter ter of old cars half burned barns dying trees all In all alla a great lack of care and pride As I said it made me heart heartsick heartsick heartsick sick when I remembered how that home honie once looked To Adam Paradise was home to the good among his descendents descendants home Is paradise paradise para para- dise neat dise-neat neat and tidy It must be about time to re renew renew renew re- re new our yearly subscription We have been away from Manti ManU for 50 years and never missed a copy of or the Messenger That must mean a bit of our hearts are still there and always will be Sincerely Mrs Adrian J. J Jensen Dear Editor Peter Greaves Sr home lo located located located lo- lo at South Main Street in Ephraim was finished sometime sometime sometime some some- time between 1875 and 1882 Peter Greaves Sr son of Thomas Greaves and Dorothy was born in Paterson New Jersey August 26 1837 His mother died when he was small and his father died in 1849 His lUs stepmother brought him to Utah In 1852 with the Capt Howell Company They located in Provo where he learned the carpenters carpenter's trade He came to Ephraim In August Augustof of 1856 received a small piece of land fand and followed farming and carpentering He later en engaged engaged engaged en- en in buying and shipping grain and produce He was married In Manti June 20 1858 to Elizabeth Motley Motley Motley Mot Mot- ley daughter of William and Elizabeth Motley He was a member of the first city council of Ephraim for eight years a member of I last a s t territorial legislative council senate commissioner In Sanpete County holding chairman chair chair- man position for two years He was the father of nine children Maud Greaves was the I last of the nine children She was born in the home In 1882 She lived there all her life She married Charles Fremont Deakin He passed away In 1965 and she passed away April 3 1971 The home now belongs to their children Cathleen Deakin Dear Editor I wish the candidates would publish where they stand on the issues How can we tell what kind of government we are voting voting voting vot vot- ing for unless we know what they believe Lydia Sorensen The kangaroo rat never drinks a drop of liquid from the time it leaves Its mothers mother's nest until it dies For water it eats small juicy tubers or seeds which yield water through the metabolic process I |
