Show Student body goals survey analyzed Most students in Utah's three community colleges have practical practical practical degree goals in mind a survey now being analyzed by bythe bythe bythe the office of the Commissioner of Higher Education shows Some 80 percent of the re respondents respondents respondents re- re at Snow College Dixie College and the College of Eastern Utah said they had made up their minds on which field of study and eventual de degree degree degree de- de gree they would seek The majority majority majority ma ma- had direct vocational or career applications Business administration of office office office of- of fice management or secretarial degrees were most of often ten named but preferences spread across many fields from agriculture to math About 25 percent of the students students students stu stu- dents at Dixie College said they would be seeking degrees in music fine arts humanities humanities humanities ties or social sciences themore the themar themore more mar e traditional academic fields The remainder of the degree intentions spread themselves across the career gamut with degrees in business adminIstration administration administration admin admin- office management or secretarial fields most often otten being named Included were vo voI vo- vo technical pursuits like I auto mechanics aircraft maintenance maintenance maintenance main main- and repair electronics and other industrial arts or technologies Life LUe sciences math education and other professional professional pro pro- pursuits also were indicated Snow College had a more morel liberal arts oriented student l body Closer to 30 percent of its students said they were pursuing the traditional liberal arts Humanities or Social Sciences was the category most often named Business AdminIstration Administration Administration Admin Admin- office management or secretarial was second and ag agriculture agriculture ag ag- or life sciences was third Teaching occupations were the next most popular followed closely by nursing and other health related studies Business related study again was the first choice of the greatest greatest greatest great great- est number of College of Eastern Eastern Eastern East East- ern Utah students Some percent said they would seek careers in business Humanities Humanities ties and social sciences were named percent of the time Health occupations such as nursing medical technology and physical therapy also were named frequently as career goals as were auto mechanics electronics and Industrial arts or technology Utah Commissioner of Higher Education G. G Homer Durham said that he was pleased with the findings of the community college survey More and more Utah students students students stu stu- dents are beginning to discover the great flexibility and op opportunity opportunity opportunity op- op available at Utah's community colleges Whether or not they choose to study further beyond their initial two years students have plenty of opportunity to develop a job qualifying skill Productive employment employment employment em em- or further education then become the alternatives and the student has a real choice Dr Durham said |
