- NEW YORK (UPI) For the second time in months feisty Billy Martin finds himself as the former manager of the New York Yankees And for the fifth time in 10 years the Martin has seen his managerial reign come to an abrupt end — either by being fired or pressured to resign New York Yankee owner George apparently tired of Martin's misconduct off the field dismissed Martin Sunday night and replaced him with former Yankee player and coach Dick Howser The latest incident in Martin's tumultuous managerial career occurred last Tuesday when Martin allegedly struck a patron at a Martin has Minn hotel Bloomington in the ininvolvement denied any publicly cident in which an Illinois salesman was taken to the hospital with a split lip Yankee sources said Steinbrenner was upset when he learned of the episode and the owner 15 Stein-brenn- er with the club's image In his dismissal of Martin Steinbrenner apparently wanted to establish with the Yankee organisation the fans and the media that he had not lost his effectiveness as an owner Howser 42 who left the Yankees last year after two seasons as a player and 10 as a third base coach to become baseball coach at Florida State University was signed to a multi-yea- r contract effective immediately Tm honored to be the manager of the Yankees" said Howser when reached at his home in Tallahassee Fla “I feel very good about it I decided between 3 and 4 pm (Sunday) that I was going to accept the job It's a chance to manage the Yankees and that's the only place I want to be at the big league level “The job was open and I was asked Saturday if I would be interested At first I was shaken I was a little shocked Everything happened in the last 36 hours that's how quickly things have happened" Howser who has often been mentioned as a Yankee mangerial candidate added “I knew George was very serious when he called me Sunday morning and sent a plane for me He told me he definitely wanted to make a change I told him 'I would like to be the guy"’ Martin who was reportedly in New York was under contract to manage the Yankees through the 1981 season He was unavailable for comment as was Steinbrenner reported to be in Ocala Fla The high strung and combative Martin had been fired by the Minnesota Twins Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers before being named to manage the Yankees with whom he played for seven years on Aug 2 1975 In May 1977 Steinbrenner levied a 62500 fine on Martin for remarks directed at the owner One month later Martin nearly came to blows with outfielder Reggie Jackson in Boston after he removed the outfielder from a game for not hustling The two had to be restrained from going at each other in the dugout His statement “they deserve each one's a horn liar and the other's convicted" in July 1978 proved to be his downfall The remark was in reference to Slcinbrenner's conviction for illegal campaign contributions to former President Richard Nixon and was also aimed at Jackson And on July 25 1978 Martin was finally forced to resign under intense pressure from the Yankee organisation and was replaced by Bob Lemon But five days later at the Yankees' Old Timers' Day game in a startling turn of events the club announced Marlin would return as manager beginning with the 1980 reason if he followed certain ground rules laid down by Steinbrenner concerning his conduct off the field Less than four months later however Martin punched a Nevada sports writer Ray Hagar while attending a professional basketball game in Reno and after receiving a public apology from Martin Hagar dropped criminal charges and the issue was settled out of court Steinbrenner was satisfied with the settlement and stuck with his decision to bring back Martin After the Yankees got off to a poor start this past season Martin replaced Lemon prematurely on June 19 in an effort to revitalize the team but New York finished fourth in the American League East The latest incident concerning Martin took place in the Hotel De France in Bloomington According to police Joseph Cooper a marshmallow salesman from Lincolnshire III was Identified ss the man who was allegedly hit by Martin following a conversation In the hotel lounge Cooper was taken to the hospital where he received 20 stitches in his lip and so far has refused to press charges Martin however told the press he did not punch anyone Howser who called Martin a fierce competitor had only praise for the embattled Martin Big gam e season continues this week for USU gridders By Steve Stout sports editor Utah State University's Aggies are heading into the stretch run for the Pacific Coast Athletic Association football n championship this week against Cal And according to Ag Head Coach Bruce Snyder this is the time of the season that is going to test the integrity and character of his USU team USU's 1979 record dropped to Saturday after Mark Malone led the ASU 4 Sun Devils to a decision It was the eighth straight "big game” for Utah Stale during the year Snyder admits Slate-Fullerto- 28-1- And Saturday's Cal State-Fullcrto- — if said n not bigger - USU Homecoming foe presents a game as big than Arizona State he “We are going to have to try and recapture what we were three weeks ago" USU head coach said in the fourth-yea- r mark brforc reference to USU's glossy losses to BYU and ASU with a win over Pacific sandwiched in between “It seems like every Saturday we have had to 'get up' for a big game" Snyder said "And it's a little more difficult to be as enthusiastic eight weeks into the season than it is when you begin the year “This is the time of year that we are going to have to suck it up We don't like to think the team is tired — we pride ourselves in being physically conditioned — and we can't afford to be tired takes a lot out of our players when we ask them to play 80 — some of them play 90 — downs every Saturday But we don't have the same numbers of players that a lot of the bigger schools have This will be the test of the character of the team This time of the year tests your integrity more than any other time" In an effort to set a precedent about USU's Integrity Snyder is making no excuses for losing to the Pac-1- 0 member Sun Devils Not even the fact that five Ag starters were either hampered or sidelined by injuries the week before In Stockton Calif where the Ags squeezed by a tenacious Pacific squad 4 “It's easy to say to ourselves that the injuries were responsible for the loss" he said "I'm not naive enough to think it wasn't a factor of some kind in the game but there were tome legitimate things during the game that we could have controlled -- but we just didn't" The first event that USU didn't control followed a school record trying punt by Aggie Guy McClure of 75 yards that pushed the Sun Devils back to their own two-yar- d line Malone the ABC Television Network's offensive player of the game then swept the left side of the Aggie defense before outrunning the secondary for a (ourhdown The second event came shortly after the run when Eric Hippie threw his first Interception in 21 quarters on a fourth-dow- n play in ASU territory 15-1- "Those two things which involved both units (offensive and defensive) took a lot out of us" said Snyder “The run by Malone was a frustrating turn of events at the time) Rut we (USU trailrd only didn't give up and continued "It definitely 14-- things that came out of it" The Aggies can't be ridiculed for not trying Steve Steinke opened the second half with an kick that ASU fell on and punier Guy McClure — the outstanding USU individual statistically with a average on eight punts — turned running back on a fake punt He was stopped short as USU needed over 20 yards for the first on-si- 48-ya-rd down "We were scrambling at best" Snyder said "We fell if we could just eatch ASU off guard the things might work and the momentum might turn in our favor “A loss has never set well with me" he continued “and we tried everything we could to beat them I don't know that I have ever gone into a game where I haven’t honestly felt we could beat the opponent" The Saturday battle against Fullerton is pivotal for USU in more than one way They have to win to keep pace with current leader San Jose Stale (34-1- ) a victory over Long Beach State Saturday The Ags also need the win to help inltlste a new wave of enthusiasm to end the season Snyder said In other PCAA action Saturday night Pacific fell to last place in the conference with a setback at the hands of Fresno State and Fullerton romped by Cal State
