M H H. H Felt Mantl Manti had a large variety of business establishments back 60 years ago Among them were Two drug stores one known as the MantI Mantl Drug was operated operated operated oper oper- by William Brown while the other was owned by W. W W W. W Crawford There were seven clothing stores in the city back in those days Some of these stores handled other goods as well Among them were located lo located located lo- lo In the Felt Building the Luther Tuttle store located in inthe inthe inthe the building now occupied by Jensens Jensen's Dept Store and Carpenters Carpenter's Carpenters Carpenter's Carpenters Carpenter's Car Car- penters penter's Fabric Center the MantI Mantl Coop which was housed In the buildings where the MantI Mantl Grocery and state liquor agency are now located Beehive store located In the building now owned owned own own- ed by Ray Frost situated Just south of the Bright Spot Fred Alders Alder's store was where the Clarence home now stands at 27 Jacob Fikstad store also known as the Scandinavian Store was located where the Bradshaw Auto Parts store is This store was later operated by Fred Keller and his brother Jack A grocery store was operated operated operated oper oper- by Jim Hoggan In the buildIng building build build- ing which now houses the Smiths Smith's Food Store The Mantl Manti Grocery Store was run by Charley Braithwaite and his brother Ed on the property now owned by William lane Manti Mantl also boasted a bakery operated by David lo located located lo- lo in the building where the Don Stott Barber Shop Is Isnow Isnow isnow now housed The business district was graced by three confectionary stores One of them was operated by byM M M. M D. D Dick Dailey He was one of the first In this area to make candy for sale He also made Ice cream in his store and sold In bulk to the public This store was situated situated situated situa situa- ted on the plot of ground where Lloyd 0 O. O has his abstract office Tennants Tennant's Confectionery was located just east of the bank This store was operated by Alexander Tennant They also made ice cream Mrs Brown also ran a candy store and Ice cream cream parlor This business was located In Inthe the same location as the Keith Young Upholstery Store is now Parley McFarlane operated a candy store and sandwich shop next to the Beeh Beehive ve Store Mrs was proprietor of a candy store In the old Dairy Queen Building on North Main Street ManU Mantl also had two meat mar mar- One of them owned by William Hoggan was located where Art Nells Nell's used car lot lotIs lotIs lotis Is now situated and the second operated by Nephi Ottosen was housed in the he building where the Lund TV Store is located Three millinery stores carried carried carried car car- ried a full line of notions etc There were two furniture stores located in Mantl 60 years ago One was Dyreng Anderson-Dyreng which 1 Is now known as Simmons Furniture and the second was A. A 0 O. O Andersons Anderson's which was located in the same building that is now used for Mowers Mower's Second Hand Store Two saloons were located in ManU Mantl at the time Ume The Dewey saloon located where the Tibbs and law office Is now was one while the other the Fox Saloon had its headquarters Inthe In Inthe inthe the same spot where the old fire station stands today on west Union Street Two creameries made Manti Mantl their home One was situated just west of the Ken Kiesel Klesel Sr home where ice cream was also made and the second one was at Crystal milk was free for the asking Manti Mantl boasted six blacksmith shops Proprietors were WIllfam William William Wil WIl- liam Reid H H. H P. P Hansen Otto Nielson William Nielsen and his father lather Mr Erickson and andL L L. L M. M Sidwell There were were also two wheelwrights wheelwrights wheelwrights wheel wheel- wrights doing business here L. L T. T Buchanan and Amasa Merriam The two saw milles were operated by Andrew H H. H Anderson Ander Ander- son and E. E M. M Works They manufactured all kinds of buIldIng building build buIld- ing materials from the lumber of the Mantl Manti Canyons There were two lumber yards in business business business bus bus- iness the Baker Lumber Co later known at Bonneville Lumber Lumber Lumber Lum Lum- ber and the ManU Mantl Lumber Co Two steam threshing machines machines machines ma ma- chines were in operation in Mantl Manti One was owned by Peter Lund and the other by Niels Jorgensen A box factory was started by Dr Sears and Ralph Hou- Hou gaard There was also a canning canning canning can can- ning factory In full operation There were two shoe repair shops in business one was owned owned own own- ed by byC C. C F. F Carlson and the other by John R R. R Nielson Sr They also carried a line of shoes The city also had its tailor shop owned by Pe Peterson Peterson Peterson Pe- Pe terson where suits were made to order In the way of amusement Felts Felt's Pavillion furnished shows dancing and roller skating Ing It was located on the property property property prop prop- erty of William WIllfam McFarlane In 1909 the Mantl Theater was built It featured one of the largest stages this side of Provo where many of the traveling traveling trav trav- eling stock companies played The ManU Mantl Theater was also used by our own home dramatic dramatic dramatic drama drama- tic players It was also used by the ManU Mantl High School for many plays and operas Moving pictures were shown six nights a week at the theater The dance hall ball to the east of the theater was the scene of many a dance It featured a spring floor which is well- well remembered by everyone who danced at the Armada Besides the churches we had the Presbyterian church with a very fine man as pastor Theodore Martin The Manti Mantl Messenger was managed by E. E D. D Ewing Later M. M A. A Boyden took over the reins of the paper which was located in the building where Stewarts Stewart's Cafe now operates L. L F. F Becker owned and oper the roller mill where flour was produced and shipped by rail to other communities Lets Let's not forget the City Cadet Band led by George Brox and Fred Kammerman There were three doctors Dr Sears Dr and Dr Nelson ManU Mantl also had three dentists Dr Bird Dr Tuttle and Dr Clark We had two photo shops one operated by Mr Olson and theother the theother theother other by Sam Brockbank One jewelry store was also in operation with Mr gaard as the proprietor It was located on the site where Mrs Francis Warwood now resides I hope looking back brings back many memories to some of the readers of the ManU Mantl Messenger |
