Show STAhLE AhLE By LARRY STAHLE One woman to another Honest Ive I've already told you more about what's going on than I actually heard my my- self A week ago last Monday the Manta Mantl firemen were summoned to Sterling to put out a fair- fair sized grass and brush fire tire In fact when I left Manti Mantl I Iwas Iwas Iwas was almost positive by the amount of smoke that the entire town of Sterling had been putto putto put putto to the torch On the way out I saw a slow moving funnel of ot blue smoke on 00 the highway and concluded that the firemen should have quelled this smoke on their way to Sterling As I drew closer to the object ob object object ob- ob I noticed that the cars were passing It although It was moving When I saw that the smoke was being emitted from the taU tall pipe of the small ManU Mantl fire truck I was afraid that the town of Sterling was doomed to extinction via fire When It became my turn to follow the small red fire en engine engine engine en- en gine I noticed that my speedometer speedometer speedometer speed speed- ometer was barely wiggling at 10 miles per hour A bit of mental arithmetic brought meto me meto meto to the conclusion that we would take about a half an hour to arrive at our destination Just then the red truck with the curling blue exhaust pulled over to the side of the road to allow the vehicles behind to pass As I went by I noticed that barber Don Stott was at atthe atthe atthe the controls and I could tell from the look on his face he felt like a ballplayer on the bench who was itching to get Into the game After Arter passing the nearly idle fire truck I proceeded out to Sterling to see how close the small hamlet had come to ex ex- ex My suspicions that the town was ablaze grew stronger when I saw Keith Young headed south Although he seemed to be well within the speed limit you could tell he anxious to was get home and save his property When I arrived in Sterling I could see that the town was in no Immediate danger Although Al Although Although Al- Al though the fire was contained In the ravine area north and west of town It could have been far more serious than It was After spending about ten minutes minutes minutes min min- utes and a few yards of film In the area I decided to head back to ManU Mantl After getting unscrambled un unscrambled un- un scrambled from the cars out outto outto outto to see the blaze I then headed north After traveling about a mile mUe from the fire scene I again saw the small cloud of blue smoke headed south as determined determined determined deter deter- mined Don made his way to the fire His determination paid off The fire was put out with only minor damage I was happy to hear that the ManU Mantl city council has decided to equip Dons Don's smoking blue-smoking fire buggy with a new engine It is now sitting up at the Manti Mantl City yards on First East await awaiting ing its engine transplant A man rushed into a drugstore drug drugstore
