Show Wednesday, August M, 1374 Page 30 golf . hiking By Ralph Emery Professional Park City Golf Course by Jeri Ragland Setup and Alignment Setup and alignment are two of the most important things in teaching the modern swing. Alignment to the target will predetermine how the body will be used in the golf swing. For instance, when a player lines up p to the right of the target, this necessitates an action with the upper body moving faster to and through the impact zone which, in turn, causes a spinning action with the hips to get the hall back to the left. When the blade is aligned at the target, the tendency p toward this action is diminished and a pulling motion becomes easier to accomplish. Many players who have for years shots with an open dub face will have the feeling that the blade is to the left of the target when it is actually square. Ideally, the back is bent forward from the hips and the lower back is bent inward. The knees are flexed as if the person were about to sit on a stool. The hands are doser to the body than is a line drawn from the eyes straight down to the ground. The arms hang straight down from the shoulders rather than outward. The right arm is relaxed and under at address so that the right side may be submissive to the left side during the backswing (and, therefore, throughout the entire swing). The stomach is pulled in and the shoulders are pulled back. The left foot is pointed out slightly, while the right foot is perpendicular to the intended line of flight. The shoulders, hips, and knees are aligned square 10 me intended line of flight. In advanced players, the hips tend to be slightly open while the shoulders and knees remain square to the line of flight. The left shoulder and hip are higher than the right shoulder and hip. The right shoulder feels like it is soft and under and parallel to the line of flight. (There is a tendency for players to violate this by allowing the shoulders to be open at address.) The upper body is back behind the ball and behind the left knee. There is some pressure on the inside muscles of the thighs and calves. The weight is about 60 percent on the over-the-to- over-the-to- eir leftside. YOU SHOULD Be prepared, and the best way is to begin a program of exercise for fitness at least 2 months ahead of your scheduled packing trip. Walk, jog, or run, using the same equipment as you would in the hills (boots and weighted pack, etc). See your doctor for a complete physical examination, and while there, have him help you put together a good first aid kit. Remember, your kit should weigh less than 2 pounds total and should have you for any and all emergencies. We asked a doctor friend of ours for help in organizing a good first aid kit and this is what we ended up with: An assortment of band aids 4 or 5 sterile gauze pads-- 4 X4 a 2 or 3 universal dressings (by Curity 9 X 36 ) 3 Roller bandages (King or Kerlex) well-equippi- ed ' multi-traum- roll Paper tape-- 1 Scissors Tweezers (a hemostat is better but expensive) 2 Ace bandages-on- e each of 2, 4 and 6 Frigiderm (ethyl chloride spray in a metal canister which instantly freezes a painful deep cut or sprained ankle) Betadine (or antiseptic Iodine, Neosporin, etc.) Aspirin Matches Scalpel blade This is our basic kit to which we add the following, depending on climate and locale: Insect repellent (must contain 40 percent N-. .
