Here is a list of supplies that are very handy to have around horses in case lameness, illness, or cuts, etc., should occur. 1. Hoof lameness. pick - to clean out the hoof and expose the sole to determine 2. Curved knife - to cut away and expose more of the sole than the hoof pick can. 3. Mild soap, such as baby soap - to wash wounds, clean out the eyes, and not cause stinging. 4. Hoof dressing - should be used regularly, but is good to have around to use if the hoof becomes torn or chipped. 5. Sponges of various sizes they should be kept separate for each such purpose as, cleaning the eyes, cleaning the nose, bathing the horse, etc. 6. Liniment or brace - for minor stiffness; read the directions very This list may seem long; however, if you look closely, you will see that half of these supplies are things you keep in your home. It is not necessary to have one for the home and one for the horse. It is important that you have one. Veterinarians are very busy and it seems that most of the calls for emergencies are not actual emergencies. But when you are referring to the horse you love, you will say anything to get a vet to see your animal. A rule to go by is: Dont use anything on your horse that you wouldnt use on yourself. There is alot in that statement, yet it is very simple. In this area, most people who have horses board them. The few boarding stables around do have people who either work there or board their horses there, and they are quite knowledgeable in this field. Do not be afraid to get help if you need it. First aid courses are great when you take them, but their value comes from your ability to use what you learn when you need it. Experience is the best teacher. Most important, if your vet gives you instructions on follow-u- p treatment, be sure you do it. Half of healing comes from proper, conscientious follow-u- p care. carefully. 7. Blanket (horse type) - to protect a sick horse from extreme changes in environment or body temperature. 8. Thermometer - be sure you know how to use it. I suggest tying a to the hole at the end so you dont lose it. It has happened ! string Antibiotics - comparable to our penicillin, for intramuscular use only. 10. Syringes - disposable variety only. 11 . Needles - disposable variety only. If you have a reason to give a shot to a horse, be sure you have been instructed on how to do it properly and that you do so under completely sterile conditions. 12. Boric powder - to use as an eye wash. 13. Epsom salts - to use for soaking sore limbs. 14. First aid cream - to dress wounds that are exposed and need 9.
