Show Wednesday, June SS 19, 1974 crrv V . III Page 13 THEiGIVING SOIL saw a big herb display in Rozs Park City Floral this week, and it reminded me of a good idea for an herb garden Id seen. It was a wheel garden made from a heavy wagon wheel. This idea seems ideal for our western area, and Im sure wheels are still to be found in some of the farmyards around. Once you have a wheel, select a sunny spot mi level ground or on a gentle slope. A hole should be dug out for the hub, so that the wheel rim will rest on the ground. Fill the spaces between the spokes with a sandy loam. A recommended mix is equal parts compost and loam, and double parts of sand. (Dont use the sand found along the road to Heber. It was once tailings ponds and has chemicals in it that are bad for plants.) If you are going to plant mint, bury plates of metal (license plates) in the ground around the boundaries of its section, as mint really creeps out of control. Back on the subject of Rozs 'display. She has plants of parsley, chives, lavender, anise, I by Carolyn Huff Outdoor cooking certainly makes the summer en- tin can stove and buddy burner can easily be made from common household items, which will provide many hours of enjoyment and also an inexpensive method of cooking fried food. Both are compact and can be taken on hikes, bike trips and camping trips. A tin can stove is a fun way to prepare any type of fried food - potatoes, cheeseburgers and bacon, for example. The supplies you will need are : joyable. A 1. A number 10 can 2. Tin snips 3. Punch can opener To prepare the stove : 1. Cut one end out 2. Cut a door in the can, about 3 inches high and 4 inches wide, on the end of the can that is opened. 3. When ready to use, pull the door open. 4. With a punch-typ- e can opener, punch 4 or 5 holes to around the top, permit the smoke to go out. ' To control the flame, a damper can be made. To make one, take a strip of tin foil about 18 inches long. Fold it in sections. Turn the foil under at one end, so you have a flat piece of foil 3 inches wide and 12 inches long. Place the end of the foil, which was turned under, under the flame and then turn the other end under, so it will prop the foil up. r by JENNIFER GIDDINGS SHARP caraway, horehound, and catnip all ready to transplant. In addition, she has packets of many different herb seeds and the Sunset book on growing herbs. I checked at the Rain Forest also, and they have some little kits for starting herbs and a book called Herbs for Every Garden by Gertrude B. Foster. Linda also suggested another way to grow herbs for people with only a little space. It was to use those big pots for growing strawberries the ones with pockets in their sides. Then, you could grow a different herb in each pocket. Our vegetable garden is growing wonderfully. I hope yours is, too. And, have you noticed Burnis Watts garden on Park Avenue? It looks like right out of a picture book on how to do it. Were eating radishes and baby lettuce as I thin it. The beans and com popped up almost overnight with this warm weather. Just keep up a watering schedule, for this is a very dry spring. Our strawberries are setting berries and the mint has grown so much its almost out of control. If anybody wants some mint for making jelly (to go with leg of lamb), give me a call. Theres plenty. Its time to start putting food like this away for winter. I noticed in the Salt Lake classified ads that rhubarb and asparagus are available for canning and freezing. Strawberry jam can be done now too. If youre interested in canning, talk to George at Mount Air about canning bottles. I dont know if were going to have a shortage this year or not, but he orders ahead of the season, so it might be useful to him to know who wants bottles. 3-in- ch The supplies you will need to prepare a buddy burner are: 1. A tuna fish can 2. Cardboard 3. Wax The steps in preparing a buddy burner are : 1. Cut the cardboard into strips the same height as the tuna can. It needs to be cut so the small holes in the cardboard are vertical to the can. 2. Roll tiie cardboard together and place in the can. 3. Pour melted wax over the cardboard. (Caution: If the wax is overheated, it will flame. ) Preparation of simple meals can offer hours of fun and personal satisfaction. ubb low M H M g M PRIZES 1st $1 00 Wolfes Gift Certificate M 2 Down Sleeping Bag 3rd Pair of Hodgman Fishing Wadersjl 4th Fenwick Fishing Rod H 5th Garcia Fishing Rod g OPEN ONLY TO RESIDENTS OF PARK CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT IS SLC Departure Schedule Departs Continental Bus Depot 8:30am Arrives Park City 905 am 500 pm 400 pm Park City Departure Schedule Arrives Departs TMI SLC 930 am 10:15 am 5:15 pm 6:00 pm rates.
