Otto Mileti was speaking of the direction that he and his wife Carmen are taking with respect to their restaurant. Otto and Carmen came to Park City about three years ago from Houston, Texas. Otto, a native Texan, met Carmen, a native Guatemalan, while they were both attending the University of Texas. They were on their way back from a vacation when they stopped off to visit some friends in Park City, and have stayed ever since. In Texas, they had planned to open a small gift shop which would specialize in crafts as jewelry, batik, and leather had learned at a school in San Miguel, Mexico. However, after meeting and getting acquainted with Park City, they decided to try it here. So around Christmas of 1971, they opened their first business venture, Xanadu. Their plan for the store was to make jewelry and other items, and then work into the imports. They eventually carried items that came from RIDING STABLES Now Open Daily K)am-6p- m Closed Wednesdays HORSE BACK RIDING Vi hour -- 1 hour - or longer PONY RIDES CHILDRENS BUCKBOARD RIDES --su- ch ---they Guatemala, Columbia, P.S. While Xanadu was open, the old Clear Creek Leather Shop across the street, present site of Mileti 's closed down, so Otto called the owner and arranged to buy it. During this time, they were having problems with their landlord and, as they were in the process of building the restaurant, they decided to close Xanadu. Otto said that they would have liked to have left Xanadu open for business, but they couldn't afford the time to, close it down, relocate, and reopen it. They got a loan, acquired the building in June of 1972, and went to work remodeling both the inside and the outside. Otto stated that he had never built anything before, although from looking at his restaurant, you could never guess it. He and a good friend, Skip Van Rees, did all the building and carpentry, although neither one had had any professional experience. Otto said that he couldnt have put together the restaurant without a lot of help from (his) friends, especially Skip. Otto and Carmens decision to open a restaurant was based upon the belief that the town needed more good- resturants. He feels that the people on the Council are too personally and emotionally involved and uninformed of the facts to be an objective governing body. He also believes that Mayor Prices resignation will be detrimental to the economics of the city. In closing, he told people not to worry the patio will reopen soon for dining.
