The trio are employed under the Title IV program to help studets with their lessons. Additional aides will be placed in West Junior High School to help student success. The teacher-studen- t ratio was small and enabled highly individualized instruction. The teachers participated in workshops to give them an added background for instruction and gave an opportunity for discussion of problem areas. Parent involvement was very evident. The school faculty made parent contacts for positive actions of the students and not always for the negative ones they said. Upon admission, which is voluntary or by court referral, a standards contract is signed by the school, students, and par ents. This covered areas of bell schedule; lunch; attendance; closed campus; conduct; alcohol, drugs and narcotics; weapons; threats; dice and cards; radios; smoking; grooming, buses; automobiles; personcl property; and classroom rules. The schedule was based around a four hour program of no more than four classes. The main objective of the school is to provide a senior high school program which permits a student to work toward or complete credits for graduation. The two schools were covered in one day and the elementary group departed Los Angeles International Airport with destination San Jose while the secondary group left for San Diego. MODEL SCHOOL The Ventura School at Palo Alto is a model school implementing the Glasser concept of Schools Without Failure. A brief orientation period led by a teacher who was involved with the method from the beginning started the day, which was also observation day. Visitors from other areas of California including the Uintah Basin group were guided by a schedule which included observation of classroom meeting techniques. This concept is one of the essentials of the Glasser method. The Ute parents visited a class. Four and five year olds were directly involved with the teacher in the class meeting. In addition to the regular structure teaching, extra class activities were suggested by the students. The student body was a mixture of several ethnic groups. Stanford University is located in the area and many children from foreign countries attend the school. Children ranging from ages four to 11 attend the class. They were divided into age groups, i.e. 7, 8 and 9 year olds, 8, 9 and 10 year olds, 9, 10 and 11 year olds were grouped together, rather than grades. The teachers explained report cards are not used. Progress reports are given through parent consultations. Involvement and caring were two words which were evident as keys in the success-oriente-d school A film on school discipline problems was viewed by the group. This presented a new approach to the problem. Practical solutions using the success concepts of Dr. Glasser' s Reality Therapy were put into practice to achieve discipline. This Him emphasized discipline is not punishment but gives the student responsibility in evaluating his behavior and getting a commitment to correct it. A quick departure from the San Francisco International Airport ended the two-dawhirlwind tour of the shcools. y |
