Show the rr .ENTERPRISE Inefficiency at any cost Solar complex planned for Pioneer USGS resents proposed move, customers to aet the Bureaucrats in the United States Geologic Survey are fed up with the bureaucratic decision to move part of their operations to a location at 1700 So. Redwood Road. The move has been recommended by the General Services Administration, landlord for all federal buildings, because of what they call a serious space crunch. The proposal would relocate the Water Resources and Conservation Divisions of USGS at the Redwood location, while leaving the Public Information and Maps Division at its present location on the 8th floor of the Federal Building, 125 South State. Ted Arnow, District Chief of the Water Resources Division, claims such a move would break up the efficient operation of the Survey. He also notes the idea for the move belongs entirely to GSA and that he isnt quite sure why USGS is the agency getting the boot. USGS has no desire to move, he added. Spokesmen for GSA in Denver agreed the move might create some difficulty for USGS, but claimed it would be the least adverse of the various alternatives considered. They noted the move would free 16,000 square feet of office space in the Federal Building-spa- ce they say is needed for expansion of high public contact agencies such as the Small Business Administration and the Bureau of Reclamations Young Adult Conservation Corp. Arnow disagrees, arguing, We deal with them (the public) all the time. He added that the USGS is in virtually constant contact with the Bureau of Land Management, whose offices are located downtown. In addition, the map division is used on a daily basis by USGS and their customers. Arnow claims splitting the operations will create a great deal of difficulty for those who need the services of any division. He says when the agency moved into the Federal Build-- , ing several years ago, the Water Resource and Conservation Divisions got rid of their libraries because of the proximity of the Map and Public Information Division. Trying to build a new library would be a difficult and expensive task, he claims, but it would be necessary because when people use the Water Resource or Conservation Division, they invariably need a map division as well. GSA officials responded that Department of Interior John Price Associates run-arou- nd officials in Washington have concurred with the recom- move. mended However, USGS officials in Denver felt they could block it. None of those contacted was sure when a final decision could be expected, with many even unsure of who would be making the final decision. fff will begin work in August on a 23,000 square foot manufacturing complex in Pioneer Square for Simplistic Solar, Inc.
