Already holes But Stewart pointed out last week there are already two holes (otherwise known as culverts) in the causeway. Theyre each 15 feet wide and 20 feet deep, but they havent done much good because the bottom ten feet have been clogged up by silt, Stewart explained. Fresh water has gotten through the top part, but brine has been blocked from going south. According to Stewart, Southern Pacific has been cleaning up what silt it could see along the outer parts of the culverts on a regular basis, (using a drag line) but it hasnt done anything about the deposits which it couldnt see inside the culverts. Stewart said he feels thats because railroad officials simply didnt know about the clogging. Stewart explained the north flood damage was caused by precipitation of salt in the north to the bottom of the lake. Consequently, the north Manteghis to open restaurant Pier 54 Restaurant will open as the Paradise Island Restaurant on New Years Eve if all goes according to plan, its new proprietor told the Enterprise last week. Eliminate problems If the culverts are cleared, the division director maintained, better than a million acre feet of water will be circulated that otherwise would be blocked. Since then, the problems listed above have gotten worse because there has been no brine flow for years. According to Stewart, the Great Salt Lake is the only lake in the northern hemisphere with a counterclockwise flow. Western division manager Art Pochart said a masonry store in Brigham City is already complete and one in Bountiful is nearly finished. The stores will be stocked and leased to franchisees for $21 per square foot, he explained. No franchises have been signed, he added. The franchise contract requires each store to represent the Coast to Coast market line, but no overriding sales royalty is paid to the corporation after the initial inventory investment. The restaurant will feature the southeastern Pacific cuisine with its emphasis on natural and fresh foods, Maleck Manteghi said. Targeted opening date is Dec. 31. Manteghi has great plans for the restaurant once the Salt Lake Center for the Performing Arts opens next door, but until then hes prepared to offer his own entertainment. Many of his 40 employees, he said, will perform as accomplished violinists, pianists, and guitarists. Paradise Island is in the process of applying for a liquor license, he added. He said Pier 54 used to have one. The restaurant scats 260. The Manteghis opened the Royal Palace a year ago on st New Years Eve.
