Van de Graajf Editor's Note: Mr. Van de Graaff s column has been published in the Congressional Record. The following is dedicated to a particular Washington Columnist: It can now be stated with a degree of accuracy, that the drought in Utah is a conspiracy. Greed motivated individuals who want to raise the price of water and force completion of the Central Utah Project, have fabricated a shortage. In addition, for reasons I choose not to reveal at this time, the National Weather Service has been deliberately reporting reduced rain and snow fall throughout most of the Rocky Mountain Area. The N.W.S. is not the only government agency involved. e Forest Service personnel have been claiming inspections which ostentatiously substantiate the weather on-sit- services reports. am obligated to reveal that both the National Weather Service, and the Forest Service has a long history of involvement with the big money water users. The American people are now being asked to believe it coincidental that drought propaganda peaked just prior to the I announcement of proposed Presidential budget cuts. Cuts which would slow down the development of the environmentally questionable Central Utah Project. The issue that is being avoided is whether or not someone in the administration, sympathetic to the money-meleaked news of the Presidents budget cuts. No doubt the water barons are taking a page from the book written by their cousins in the oil industry. Only too well do we remember the cries of an impending gasoline shortage, followed by rising prices and the push to build the n, These rates were obtained by telephone conversation with the above institutions. If the public is gullible enough to believe the drought myth, they may deserve what they get. What they will get will be higher prices and continued dependency on the money boys. Soon there will be claims that water wells are harder to find, that they need to be drilled deeper and cost more money. Price increases will follow. There will be efforts to build reservoirs regardless of environmental objections. Local shortages will be used as an excuse to change existing regulations and force prices even higher. In the meantime, a highly placed source, whose name I cannot reveal, informs me that Congress is planning no action. The people must depend on the administration to find answers to the following. 1 . To what extent has the drought been contrived by the greedy? 2. What is the relationship between the water men and those government agencies who supposedly serve the people? 3. Why is it that the only information available is supplied by the water and snow people themselves? 4. What interlocking directories exist between water big-busine- ss and oil companies? e 5. Have lobbyists insured Congress will not act? big-tim- Until these questions and others arc answered, the people have a right to be skeptical about the drought. Conservation may be desirable, but only after it has been proved that we are not being duped. V, Lighting Fixtures on Display ftS? ,if COMMERCIAtaINDUSTRIAL . ,sssi V" - .RESIDENTIAL t ' 'H 'J, I ..
