Show Page two The National Enterprise , june JJf 1976 Coors Victim of Bureaucratic Persecution DENVER Labor unions and government agencies are contributing to the collapse of the free enteprise system, and industry must fight the decline, said William K. Coors, chairman of Adolph Coors Co. of Golden, Colo., to a meeting of the Denver Society of Securities Analysts. If the rate of collapse of the free enterprise system continues, he said, 20, 30 or 40 years in the future there wont be any jobs for money managers because there will be no need for them. Giving examples, Coors said that staff members of the Federal Trade Commission told Coors lawyers that the commission attacked the brewing firm because it was getting too big. He explained that the firm fought the commission in the courts for seven years, and lost at the U.S. Supreme Court. The brewing firm, he said, now cant engage in many of the accepted business It's that kind of practice practices of its competitors. The commission has said that it won't do anything about the same practices as they are exercised by competitors, he added. Thats bureaucratic persecution. In another example, Coors noted that his company had been fined $4,000, with $2,000 suspended, in Colorado for a violation of water pollution laws. Adolph Coors Co. had complied with those laws for 10 years, he said. It has been dumping a third of the amount it is allowed to into Clear Creek. But, he said, there was an incident, and no company can operate without them. The firm reported the incident, We according to law and violaas were fined supreme tors. ? .N 1 ' v vV . $ f There are about 300 other violators and virtually nothing is being done about them, he said. Examples are the town of Grand Lake, Colo., which dumps raw sewage into Grand Lake. Denver has never been in compliance with its sewage system, he added, and consistently dumps sewage into the South Platte River. that is applied to American industry, Coors said. In another example, he said that he attended his daughters graduation from an Eastern university, a private university supported by funds from people who make their money from business. The speaker at the ceremony was an associate editor of the New York Times, he continued, and the theme of the talk was that no one should have to work unless they wanted to, that all wealth should be divided equitably and that all the money a person makes during a lifetime should go to the government instead of being passed on to children or relatives. Thats a utopia even the communists havent come up said. And, he added, the speaker received a five minute standing, screamThats the rule, ing ovation. rather than the exception, he with,-Coor- s said. Coors also commended a competitor in the brewing industry, the Budweiser plant of Anheuser-Busc- h in The firm held out in its fight with unions at the plant, he said. He explained that the union wanted to take over some of the management prerogatives, such as the selection of some of the brewing equipment in the plant and the number of people that would be needed to handle each piece of equipment. He said that Coors is expecting a strike at its Golden plant later this year over some of the same issues, and, the fact that Budweiser was able to hold out would help Coors with its negotiations. Coors also said that industry management can win against unions as long as it can keep the plants running without union people, even at a reduced rate. If the unions are allowed to shut the plant down, he said, the unions will win every time. Contracts Awarded Nuclear Services CAMPBELL, California Contracts to provide a variety .
