There are many organizations, as well as individuals, who exercise this prerogative, and the resulting cacophony simply muddies the water instead of filtering out the best solutions to the problems of agriculture. Government employees are responsible to their political appointee or to the political party in power at the moment. Therefore, under no circumstances can they speak for the farmers of America. Under the democratic system, our nation has achieved a position of preeminence among the nations of the world. The majority opinion of the people elect our representatives to formulate both national and foreign policy. Farm Bureau also operates under the democratic system where majority opinion rules and, under this proven system, it has gained a position of preeminence among general farm organizations who claim to represent and, therefore, to speak for the farmers. Three out of four farm families who belong to any general farm organization belong to Farm Bureau, and in some areas of the country the percentage runs as high as 89 Farm Bureau membership. With this numerical strength, certainly the articulate voice of Farm Bureau should be heard, and its opinions studied when making decisions that will affect the health of our agricultural economy. However, in Farm Bureau, we have a wide variation of opinion as how best to accomplish our objectives of achieving educational improvement, economic opportunity and social advancement. Many of the protestors have no better solutions to offer, and so, they retard the progress and eventual success of our endeavors. Farm Bureau needs a catalyst to help resolve the vast differences that separate our membership. This should be the urgent need to improve the common lot of every farm family who is being short changed in our present-da- y parity ratio. A redcdication of support and loyalty by the members will also lend emphasis to the major efforts now being made by your Farm Bureau organization at every level of our activity, local, state and national.
