Show Letter to the Editor A Californian Discovert The Craft Shop A $ Wanting to write a couple of articles for the Test Run," I wandered over to the Post Craft Shop for a story. When I en- tered the building, I could hear machines machining, grinders grinding and hammers hammering. Instantly, I felt surrounded by bustling activity. In front of me, Craft Shop director M. G. (Mike) was discussing ceramics with a shop patron, but his warm and friendly manner immediately put me at ease. Explaining , . my reason for being there, we began a tour of the shop. AS WE TRAVERSED each room the fascinating world of ' hobbies was revealed to me. I felt my enthusiasm grow, as; I imagined myself doing the thousands of things Ive always wanted to do. I was absolutely amazed; I have been on post five months and never knew what I was missing. In the Ceramics room were a variety of 200 different ceramic pouring molds ranging from plain little ash trays to nativity scenes. The slip" (liquid clay) and the glazes)) (paints) and routing tools and spatulas are the only things Mike sells in this department. The use of one of five kilns is free. The work area and storage space is free. The instruction is free. The Craft Shop charges only for the materials used. This means use of power machinery, tools, nails, putty, glue, screws, T; sandpaper and etc. are free. Instruction is also free. IN THE SALES ROOM you can get just about anything j you want --- paint sets, picture frames, paints, stains a. complete supply of model airplanes, leatherworking kits, hardware and glues. Anything the Shop doesn't have in the way of hobby needs, Mike will gladly get in Salt Lake Gty for you. In the Wood Shop are all the tools you need to make just about any wood project. There are a circular table saw, a radial arm saw, a jointer, a planer, a band saw, a wood turning , lathe, a drill press, a mitre box and several sanders. There is a wide choice of wood materials available and Mike will ' order anything not in stock. The Lapidary ' Shop is completely equipped with diamond edged rock cutters, buffing wheels sanding drums wet grinders wet belts and five tumblers. Pen sets, rings bracelets cuff links tie tacks, pendants and earrings are just some of the things you can make. IN THE LEATHER Shop are all the patterns punches , and kits you'll need to get a good start. Incidentally, Mikes assistant, Earnest Snook, can give you. some expert advice and some good ideas about the art of leatherworking. On Wednesday, weekly classes in Ceramic Hand Building and Throwing on the potters wheel are held from 9 p.m. Watch the Daily Bulletin for a coming class in Plastic Crape making. Also take a good look at the display counters in Post Headquarters to see the work others have done in their spare time. A youth's craft program offers continuous classes in clay hand building plaster of paris molding and leatherwork on Sata.m. urdays from YOUNG OR OLD, novice or expert, the Craft Shop has something for everyone. Those of you, who feel you lack talent, try working with instruction from Mike or Ernie.
