Show SEPT. THURSDAY, A Backward Glance NITER "The Trail Blazer" By Michael D. Kum Franklin County Clerk I get many of my stories and ideas from an old book I ran across in our library. It is titled, "The Trail Blazer" and is an uncopyrighted book put together in 1930 by the Daughters of the Pioneers. For any of you interested in further reading on some of these subjects and episodes, I commend it to your reading. The settlers met in the old log schoolhouse in Franklin one day for a special fast day service. The service was called as a means of asking for Divine help to rid the community of The fast day grasshoppers. services lasted for most of two days. For several years the grasshoppers had destroyed the crops until the people were fearful of ' starvation. The the leading men called a fast people did not eat nor drink for nearly two days. While they were in session the second day about 12 oclock, the house became very dark. A boy came running in and said the grasshoppers were leaving. The people all rushed outside and the air seemed jammed with grasshoppers. In fact, they obstructed the sun for a short time. The settlers, very much humbled, returned to the house where they thanked their Maker for hearing and granting their petitions. A man introduced the game of card playing among the local boys one day. Whenever the girls caught the boys playing cards, they would gather dead chickens or anything else they could find to put out the fire. They would climb upon the roof of the house, drop these things down the chimney into the fireplace and stop the game of cards. The boys would race out to chase to girls, which would break up the party. A pair of buckskin pants worn by James Haworth, an early settler, afforded the people much amusement. When the pants were wet, they were just the right length. As they shrank, they frequently reached just to the knees. The pants were worn every day and Sunday too. Early settlers of this area suffered many hardships also. There was a diphtheria plague that lasted over a period of three years. It seemed to reach a climax in 1879 when as many as from one to five children died in some of the homes. The members of the community seemed to be powerless to cope with this dreadful disease. Another sad affair was the tragic death of a man who was frozen to death while traveling on foot from Oxford to Franklin. Apparently, he had become exhausted while driving his herd of sheep over the cold, desolate, snow covered flat. The sheep were rescued, but his body remained buried in the snow for four months before it -- was found. Two other men were feeding cattle in the winter of 1863 in RoundValley (Oxford). It became necessary for them to go to Franklin for supplies. Owing to the long walk and cold weather, their bodies were found, frozen, sitting upright by some rocks on the slope of Little Mountain near Franklin.
