What an ending to a frantic football game last Friday! I was on the Snake River side of the field, and couldn't help but over hear their fans comments. They felt the officials cost them the game. Across the field, I'm certain the Preston fans felt that the officials almost cost them the game. A holding penalty on a critical fourth down, that lead to Preston giving the ball up with seconds left, and then the interference penalty on the final play of the game, that gave Snake River one more try from the five yard line. Whew!!! Over the years I've been told that the best officiated game is when you are not really aware of the officials being on the field. You know they are there, but they sort of fit into the background, allowing the team action to be foremost in your mind. The officials were unable to accomplish that Friday night. Coach Biggs indicated that they had a tough game to call, and we won't argue with Was there a penalty? If so, for 20 yards? We couldnt answer that, but later we were told the officials ruled that the ball had been intercepted on the five. I'd like to see a replay of that! From what I saw, Snake River never touched the ball, let alone intercepted it. Well, from then on the officials had a hard time, for penalty after penalty seemed to continue throughout the game. Since Preston won, I guess now might be the time to say something I have thought for a long time. Many times we are told never to criticize the officials, and Ive found from experience, it usually doesnt do any good. Should officials be above criticism? They can make or break a team or a game. The Olympics seem to be evidence of this. I know it is hard to be an official, Ive tried by eyes and wind at it, and I didnt like it. I found myself looking for wrong doing only, and couldnt enjoy the game. Still, an official needs to keep foremost in his mind what that game means to each team and that. player. His job is to keep the One call seemed to give a clue game fair and square; to as to what was to come, when protect the players. When the officials have a bad night, for (me reason or another, I have a hard time forgetting how bad they were. Right now, you are probably wondering, Whose side are you on, anyhow? I guess I'm on both aides! Im going to make a real effort to recognise good officiating and tell the officials I appreciate it. Yes, I expect I will still scream when the officials make bad calls, but I expect I will find myself expressing appreciation more than Ill be screaming. Why dont you join me in this effort. I wonder if the officials knew we well officiated .appreciated games, if they wouldn't make more effort to do a good job. Lets find out! The game was a gasper, but the kids did what they needed to do to win their first of the season. Theyll win more, you can be certain of that!!! BOBBY MOSER continues to be fantastic on the field defensively. Hes quick, and he covers the whole field. He even brought down a pass receiver some 50 yards down field from the line of scrimmage.
