| Show TOBACCO advertisements for some time past the news lias has been accepting tobacco advertising and running big display ads on regular contract acte rs this condition has reached a point now where we feel that we can no longer accept this class of advertising and so have notified our patrons to this effect our reason tor for taking this stand is that the public billboards are being spread over with attractive ads which are a facsimile of bf the tha ads appearing in tile newspapers and magazines and the matter is so written and arranged as to be especially enticing tu to young men we do not care to be a medium through which the tobacco manufacturer fac urges young men 0 to take u up P this pernicious iaus despie the fact ahat 1 perfectly legitimate b business us less and article Is a staple carried in practically every store in the country there are some exceptions in this city however and the news feels that it can well afford to sacrifice ile he profits which accrue from this advertising business in order that our attitude may not be misunderstood when we accepted these advertising contracts we specifically stated to the advertisers that our editorial policy was opposed to the use of tobacco and we have frequently commenter com mentel upon the evils of this habit we feel that our words will have more weight it if we do not carry the advertising at all and so have decided to reject it altogether we believe that a campaign should be waged to clean off the billboards in t the he city of this object advertising matter and in every c other aher way do what we can as a community to 0 o lessen the sale of tobacco and encourage its disuse by citizens gime generally rally it is an expensive habit and a bad one the effects of tobacco are poisonous upon the system and poison tears down the body |
