Show fHE SALT LAKE TIMES Utah's Students Rights and Responsibilities to be Defined A statewide committee to de- velop guidelines for the rights and responsibilities of Utahs public school students has been organized. The committees formation was announced this week by State Superitendent of Public Instruction Dr. Walter D. Talbot, who said that the 25 member committee will consist of students, educators youth specialists and civic leaders. The guidelines for students rights and responsibilities are bing developed at the request of the 'Utah Youth Advisory Committee (YAC). The YAC is a committee composed of student representatives from the schools which meet on a monthly basis in order to bring student views to the attention of the State Board of Education. The formal request by the students to the State Board of Education read in part: In view of students, the role of the student and his relationship to teachers and administrators is vague, if even defined. In order for students to actively contribute to the improvement of education, school policies can recognize and outline the exist-ec- e and legality of student rights as well as student responsibilities. It should be clearly understood at this juncture that students are not asking for clarification of student rights and responsibilities to force any kind of confrontation with school personnel. Such action would only compound differences rather than find satisfactory solutions to them. Rather, students desire that the educational experience will, prove to be an apprenticeship in responsible citizenship an experience in which the individual students rights are respected as well as having the opportuity to be trained and of their responsibilities in-fonn- Sugarhouse Kiwanis Club Presents Lung Assn. Most of these die within 10 days of birth as a result of calf scours that can be caused by a number of different bacteria and viruses influenced by certain predisposing factors. Veterinary scientists at Utah State University refer to it as a complex syndrome that defies complete description. They are continually learning more of its causes and methods of prevention. The latter includes attention to housing, cleanliness of utensils and proper feeding. The Utah Lung Association is Director of the Utah Lung Assn. The presentation was made at a Kiwanis Club meeting Tuesday, November 13. The Christmas Seal contribution will be used to provide a new experimental and expensive medicine to a patient with severe asthma. The patient, who wishes to remain anonymous, has not responded successfully to a variety of medicines and treatments. The gift will enable the patient to receive several weeks of the new drug therapy. The Kiwanis Club of Sugar House has an active service program, in following the Golden Rule, to bring help to people in need. The scientists say discretion must be employed in using antibiotics for treatment or prevention of calf scours. To be effective, these must be directed at specific bacteria or viruses. Some store security chiefs say juveniles are involved in the fad of shoplifting to emulate their peers, accounting for 50 per cent of all those caught. The large number of juveniles apprehended indicates to some psychologists that offending youngsters want to be caught as a means cf gaining parental attention. This year the Burns security specialist expects more older persons to yield to the urge to steal. Retirees on small fixed incomes are finding difficulty in making ends meet and unhappily may be involved in increasingly numerous thefts, particularly of foods, he said.
