Show Support of DDT to Control Moths Urged by Farm Bureau Chief Utahs Congressmen and Sena- tors have been urged to support the use of DDT in the control of tussock moths which are now sweeping across western forest lands. In a letter to the Utah lawmakers, Utah Farm Bureau Executive Vice President C. Nearly 10,000 acres have been infested in southern Idaho this first year of moth damage in our neighboring state, he said. The United States House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture recently voted to ask the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to release DDT for use in controlling this insect. We strongly urge you to exercise whatever influence you can with EPA. to release this vital control substance, wrote Mr. Wallentine. Commenting on the Farm Bureaus plea to congress for permission to use DDT in the fight against tussock moths, Wallenstein said the presence of the insect in Southern Idaho is one matter of great concern to Utah agriculture. Moths defoliate and eventually kill trees. In Utah there are 5,500,000 acres of forest lands which can be endangered by the moth if the insect is not controlled in areas surrounding us, he said. According to experts, DDT is still die most effective substance we have to control insects of this kind. Federal regulations which banned the use of DDT earlier include provisions for use of the pesticide under emergency conditions. With a nationwide shortage of construction lumber and the spread of tussock moths, we certainly have an emergency situation, Wallentine said. From Latest Federal Grant Eight Utah counties, serving about 820 children of migrant agricultural workers, will benefit from a federal Grant of $238,-66- 8 awarded to the Utah State Board of Education, HEW Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger has announced. Dr. Rulon R. Garfield, Regional Director for HEWs Region 8, headquartered in Denver, said the money comes from a 1966 amendment to Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 which provides special educational and supportive services to children of migrant agricultural workers. Nationwide, the program served some 325,000 children at a cost of $72 million last year. The programs are designed to try to make up for the frequently interrupted schooling migrant children receive as they and the parents follow the crops. The Utah State Board of Education will provide a program of basic education to migrant children, concentrating on oral language development. Individual and small group instruction will be furnished where necessary. Transportation, regular meals, and medical and dental care will also be made available under the projects, using existing community resources wherever possible. In all the projects, a concentrated effort to improve the childs opinion of himself and his capacity for success in life will be pursued through classes exploring cultural background and heritage.- Special training will be carried out to prepare teachers and other staff members to meet the particular, educational needs of migrant children. The Utah counties participating in Title I Migrant Education Programs this year are Carbon, Box Elder, Davis, Iron, Weber Salt Lake and Utah. . - What is the chief ingredient of fillet of sole? It is to end this misunderstanding that the Foundation' and Epilepsy month 1973 are dedicated. Elilepsy - the more you know about it, the more you want to help is the theme for Epilepsy Month 1973. November of each year is declared national Epilepsy Month by the President of the United States. The theme for 1973 reflects the Epilepsy Foundation of America drive to destroy the myth and misunderstanding surrounding a common neurological disorder. Epilepsy is not a disease, but rather a symptom whose cause may be known or unknown. It is not the work of the devil, nor is it punishment for ones sins. It is not contagious and the people who have it are not insane. There are 4,000,000 Americans who have epilepsy and about 50 per cent of this number have the seizures under complete control through the use of medication. But even these people who have complete control must live under the unique social stigma of having epilepsy. For the remaining 2,000,000 plus who have only partial control or no control over their seizures, the problem is more than just a physical handicap.
