Finance Commissioner Jennings Phillips, Jr., said the check is the third by the city since the U. S. government initiated the five year revenue sharing program. The recent check was for a substantially larger amount than for the same period last year. Energy Outlook r vironment, we must expect a substantial increase in the energy costs. that there is no free lunch it comes down to the fact any more. We can protect the environment and produce the energy to power a higher level of civilization, but it will take more hard work, understanding, cooperation, sustained effort also it will cost a little more. Enough is Enough Nostalgia can sometimes obscure realities of the present. A classic example is the tendency of many people to associate railroads and railroading with a fascinating, but bygone, era when the Iron Horse rushed across the empty plains and mountains forging the only transcontinental link between the east ana west coasts of America. It is time to shake off this nostalgia and look at the railroads as they are today. They are an important means of reducing environmental damage from transportation sources, they constitute one of the most vital of American industries, they carry nearly 40 per cent of all intercity freight, a nd their task in this respect is destined to grow monumentally. They can contribute mightily to curbing air pollution. A single 100 car freight train is the ultimate in efficient transportation. The diesel units at the head of the train are able to move a maximum amount of goods while emitting a fraction of the pollutants of other means of transportation. Railroads can move about four times as much freight per gallon of fuel as big trucks and 125 times as much as cargo aircraft. Today the existing railroad rights of way can absorb a greatly increased freight load thus the rails can meet tomorrows transportation needs without the necessity of burying more land under concrete for highways. The railroads are proud of the part they have played in American history. They are proud of the railroad heritage from which has sprung the nostalgia and the romance. But enough is enough. They now ask for recognition of todays transportation facts and a clear track to get on with the great transportation job that lies ahead. A Relative Term a relative term. Rough going for one person would be considered easy sailing by another. The same goes for whole nations. Consumers in our country march on Washington over grievances that would be laughable to citizens of other countries. A New York Times special news release reports on current economic troubles in Yugoslavia. There the avis the equivalent of $100 a month, and erage take-hom- e the average family spends Half of its income on food compared to less than 16 per cent for the average family in the United States. Despite this, the government has decreed that the price of white bread must rise by 23 per cent, cooking oil 10 per cent, etc. Yugoslavia has recently had a rate of inflation estimated to be around 16 per cent during the past year. It is e asy to imagine what would happen in the United States if American citizens had to pay half of their monthly income for food and, at the same time, face such stiff price increases as those now confronting the people of Yugoslavia. Yes, hardship is a relative term, and most Americans have little understanding of what it means. Hardship is U. S. Ambassador and former Utah David Kennedy said that other countries have started to work harder to compete for a share of the U. S. economy and market since the United States devalued its rollar.
