Show THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1971 Page Two DIPLOMATIC POUCH The following letters were recently answered by the Department of State: Can you be of any help in obtaining tickets and in securing accommodations for U.S. citizens who wish to attend these 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Germany? M.L.M. St. Louis, Mo. Dear M.L.M.: Were not involved in any of the arrangements for the 1972 Olympic games. The Olympic organizing Committee in Munich has been established with the approval of the German Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee to plan and administer the 1972 Games, inclding establishment of national ticket allocations and the rules and procedures for the assignment of hotel accommodations. The Olympic Organizing Committee operates independently of the local and national German authorities, coordinating its decisions directly with the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne, Switzerland. With the concurrence of the U. S. Olympic Committee, the American Automobile Assn, was designated as the sole U.S. sales agent for the tickets and accommodations by the Olympic Organizing Committee and may operate only in the guidelines laid down by the committee. We recommend you write or call to the branch of the AAA in St. Louis for information and assistance in obtaining tickets or hotel accommodations for these 1972 Games. Why have we stopped importing chrome for Southern Rhodesia? M.L.K. Gary, Ind. Dear M.L.K.: Chrome is one of the 12 Rho- desian products covered by the the United Nations Security Councils decision in December of 1966 to Impose selective, mandatory economic sanctions on Southern Rhodesia. The main purpose of the sanctions program is to lead the Smith regime in Southern Rhodesia to agree to a peaceful, negotiated settlement with the United Kingdom. Our restrictions on the importation of Rhodesian chromite, imposed in January of 1967, are but one important aspect of our compliance with the Security Councils decision. As the world leading importer of chromite, we coudl not violate the sanctions on the material without damaging the Security Councils program Such actions would be inconsistent withour obligations under the UN Charter. The major world suppliers of metallurgical grade chromite are a, the Soviet Union, Southern South the Turkey, Africa, Philippines, Iran and Pakistan. In recent years, we obtained the bulk of our supplies from South Rhodesia, the USSR, Turkey and South Africa. Although Southern Rhodesia has traditionally been a major source of chromite, so has the Soviet Union because of high quality of it ore. During the four years immediately prior to the UN sanctions against Southern Rhodesia, we imported some 32 percent of our chromite for metallurgical use from the Soviet Union and 37 per cent from Southern Rhodesia. Since the sanctions were applied, our consumption of Soviet Union has increased. Over the last two years, it has been nearly 50 per cent of our total imports; 25 per cent from Turkey and the balance from South Africa, Pakistan, Iran and other suppliers.
