Gile Sr., vice president, Continetnal Bank & Trust Co., volunteer State Chairman for the United States Savings Bonds Division, presented the U.S. Department of the Treasury aard to the members of the Utah State Press Association at their annual winter convention award Sunday, Feb. 21, for patriotic support of the U.S. Savings bond program. The Savings Bond Program in the state of Utah has sustained and met high objectives . of Treasury '. and the National Savings Bonds Director. These accomplishments could not have been met without the constant exposure of the Savings Bonds Program and we greatly appreciate the cooperation of the members of the Utah Press Association, who run our materials as a public service. The Savings Bonds Program is a public service program that does indeed return a profit to the community in that it helps create a tremendous reservoir of spending potential. Of the record high of $52.4 billion in U.S. Savings Bonds being held by Americans, it is estimated that $230 mililon is held by the citizens of Utah who are served by your newspapers. The 230 million earns $10,350,000 interest annually. This interest accrual alone will match many a large payroll, Mr. Gile said in making the presentation. Self Employed Must File Tax Returns Persons with net earnings of $400 or more from self employment must file federal income tax returns and pay a self employment tax, Roland V. Wise, IDS District Director for Utah, . said. THE SALT LAKE TIMES FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1971 Page Two - The Tax Reform Act of 1969 liberalizing filing requirements for many taxpayers so that, lor example, a single person without self employment income is not required to file a tax return unless he had income of $1,700 or more in 1970. However, an individual must file a return if his self employment income was $400 or more, even if a return would not have been required based on his total income. By filing a return and paying a self employment tax on part or all of his income, each self employed person helps finance Social Security benefits that are payable to self employed persons as well as wage earners. Besides filing an individual income tax return a self employed individual must complete Schedule SE, Computation of Social Security Self Employment Tax. Copies are available at IRS offices. . The total is now 4.40 percent of all workers covered by state and federal unemployed insurance laws, compared to 5.01 percent two weeks ago, and 4.19 percent for the week of Feb. 21. The campaign centers around a new litter creel made by Levi Strauss Company. The litter creel is a loosely woven sack 15 x 25 with a shoulder strap. It bears the message Bring Back a Limit of Litter and also the seal of Trout Unlimited. Levi Strauss Company is furnishing the litter creels which will be distributed by Trout Unlimited. The idea sounds like a good one and the litter creels could be put to good use on Utahs fishing waters. The campaign is another example of sportsmens groups that are doing something to aid the resources they use for their recreational pursuits. Such efforts are commendable and are much more effective than the hand wringing and rhetoric that is evident in some conservation organizations. 7,900 FEET! Kennecott Achieves Record Income Stockholders Told In Kennecott, on the strength of high copper prices and coal sales, achieved record income before extraordinary charges, $185 million, or $5.58 per share, according to a letter to stockholders. Extraordinary charges; however, reduced net income for the year to $150.9 million or $4.55 per share, compared with $165.4 million, or 1970, $4.99 per share in 1969. There were no extraordinary items in 1969. The extraordinray charges, totaling $34.2 million, or $1.03 per share, resulted from a writedown of the Kennecott investment in British Columbia Molybdenum, Ltd., because of continuing unprofitable operations and a loss incurred in the sale of four coal mines by Peabody Coal Co. This sale was made pursuant to a federal court divestiture judgment entered in 1967, prior to Kenne-cott- s acquisition of Peabody.
