A buried pipe about the size of a persons wrist will some day carry a quarter of a million telephone conversations simultaneously with enough capacity to transmit, letter by letter, a full set of encyclopedias of a second. in The hollow, copper-line- d steel as known pipe, waveguide, is an new comeconomical of part munications system being developed hy scientists at Bell Telephone Laboratories to meet expected growth in calling, data communications and Picturephone service during the next decade, Bruce Knight, dis 24-volu- me one-tent- h long-distan- ce trict manager for Mountain Bell, said. Partial Solar Eclipse For Utah March 7 On Saturday, March 7, while observers in Central Mexico and tlong the easlern seaboard o the United States view a total eclipse of the sun, the Intermountain West will view a partial eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 9:50 a.m. MST, as the moon begins 'o move in front of the sun, nicking the suns western edge bout one hour later, at 10:47 a.m., the eclipse will reach a maximum, with the sun 40 pet. obscured. At 11:46 the eclipse will end. There are several ways to observe the eclipse without danger to the eyes. One method is to use a sunbox. Using a cardboard box approximately two feet long, punch several small holes of different sizes in one end with a sharpened pencil. These holes serve as pinhole cameras. Use the box as if it were a motion picture theatre. The pinholes are the projection booths; the opposite end of the inside of the box is the screen. If you raste a white piece of paper inside the box on the screen area, the images will be brighter. Instead of sitting in this theatre, you place the theatre just above your head, with the pinholes in the direction of the sun. You now have a darkened eclipse theatre. It looks a little funny, but it is effective and safe. Many observers prefer to view It is expected that commercial service using the new system will be initiated in the late 1970s by AT&Ts Long Lines Dept. Waveguide, buried about four feet underground, will guide radio waves called millimeter waves carrying voice, data, television and Picturephone signals, Mr. Knight said. The mass immunization campaign is set for April 11 and 12. In order to eradicate the disease an dthe tragic birth defects frequently resulting from GerDr. Child man measles, warned, we must eliminate the source of infection. Since the contagion is transmitted chiefly among, young children, our aim is to innoculate all Utah children between ages of 1 and 12 years, regardless of whether or not they have a history of having had the disease. The reason, according to Dr. Child, is that measles are not just measles. German, measles (Rubella), red measles, Roseola and Rubeola all have similarities in symptoms. Often the distinction and diagnosis is difficult to determine, even by a physician. Some parents are not aware that red measles and German meables :are different diseases. Many more think their children have had German measles, when in fact they may have had Rubeola or 'Roseola. Rather than take the chance of children not being immuwe nized; Dr. Child stated, recommend that every strongly 1- - to child be brought to one of the special clinics to receive the innoculation. He also warned that previous vaccination for red measles does not keep a person from contracting German measles. The vaccine for German measles, only disrecently perfected, will be over tributed to the clinics all the state in time for the massive immunization drive, April Complete information of times and places will be published in advance. co-chair- 12-year-- 11-1- 2. e al ur A Fireplace from Otio Buehner Co.
