Both these items fall in the category of tailored garments and will need extra special attention, states Annette Vernon, Summit County Home Economist. But first things should come first and in any sewing project that means selecting material. "Many women who are tackling a sewing project for the first time will decide to buy inexpensive material thinking nothing much will be lost if they dont succeed. However, in so doing they lessen their chances for success," Mrs. Vernon stated. She stressed that the home sewer should purchase the best material she can afford and the . best fabric for the best pattern that is going to be used. "It is important that fabrics for coats and jackets be of good quality because tailoring requires accurate fitting, precision stitching, molding and pressing." She pointed out that pattern guides wiU list fabrics desirable and cautions against others.' "A good outer fabric for tailoring must feel resilient and alive. It will not crush when squeezed in your hand or worn. The most resilient fibers are wool and polyester," Mrs. Vernon stated. Continuing, she said, "A fabric with a firm, hard finished, unnapped surface and firm weave, or a heavy fabric, will be difficult to tailor. And a too soft fabric may not hold its shape or press. She noted that all wool fabric is generally the easiest to tailor as wool lends itself to molding, shrinking and stretching where necessary. The person who is learning to tailor will have best results with a fabric that is firm and has texture or pattern on surface (twill, pattern, tweed). A plain color and Weave shows every stitch or mistake. Brush surfaces can also cause problems because too much heat and pressure will cause shiny white spots on seams and details. For interfacings, an extra piece of fabric between the lining and outer fabric, select material comparable in quality and weight to outer fabric. The texture should be smooth and have good resilience. Make sure it has the same cleaning qualities as the outer fabric. Mrs. Vernon stressed that for good buys on materials for tailored garments, you should study the many products on the market as you consider her sug- gestions.
