A WOMAN'S WHIM Mr. and Mrs. James Robinson DETERMINED APPEARANCE OF OUR POCKET HANDKERCHIEFS were Salt Lake visitors Sunday. Once handkerchiefs were of every conceivable shape. The faet that they are all square derives from the whim of one woman, Marie Antoinette, who prevailed upon her husband. King Louis XVI, to so decree. Handkerchiefs were derived from mats of grasses which savage races wore on their heads and which were used to wipe perspiration from their brows. During. Marie Antoinette's time the people of prance had as much need for handkerchiefs, for the usual reasons, as they do today. But before the Queen took the situation in hand these essential implements were of all kinds, sizes, shapes, and varieties, when they were not missing altogether. Some were triangular, others oblong,- and still others were round. (Can you imagine carrying a round handkerchief today!) This state of affairs did not please the French queen, who even today is remembered not only for the words, Let them cat cake," and her unfortunate end at the hands of the French revolutionists, but also for her fastidiousness in dress and manners. Marie Antoinette was convinced that her subjects throughout France should use handkerchiefs that were all of the same shape square. She told her husband, the king, of her determination in the matter and prevailed upon him to issue a decree governing the shape of handkerchiefs. A royal edict on the subject of handkerchiefs was accordingly forthcoming shortly thereafter. It is dated June 2, 1785, and states that, The length of handkerchiefs shall equal their width, throughout my entire kingdom. It was signed by Louis XVI of France. Since France was the center of fashion, other countries soon adopted the custom of the square white handkerchief, a custom that has persisted to this day. So the next time you mop the perspiration from your brow, or catch cold, you may reflect that that timely square piece of white cloth owes its origin to Marie Antoinette, the fastidious French queen who lost her head on the guillotine.
