By the same token, for the gov- As we move into the "postelection period, when analysts try to figure out what the vote means, and both political parties try to determine what they did wrong, or right, there is one fact emerging which should be extremely clear to every voter in our state and nation. That is the need for unity in our leadership. As we look at the results of the recent balloting, questions come to minds: Did we elect a Republican President? Or did we elect a President of the United States? Did we elect a Democratic Governor, or a "Utah Governor? Was it a Republican Legislature that was elected, or was it a Legislature to serve the needs of the State of ernor to assume that he has any direct obligation to the Democratic party, above and beyond the best interests of the State of Utah, is courting disaster. In Utah, where party affiliations seem to indicate about equal registered Republicans and Democrats, neither the Legislature nor the Governor can claim a mandate from their party alone. 'Voters were not voting for Democrats or Republicans, as such, but were voting for individuals individuals who, they felt, would best serve their interests. In order to control more than two-thirof the seats in the State Legislature, the Republican members would have to have drawn heavily on Democratic votes. On the other hand, the Governor could not have received better than 60 of the popular vote of the state, without heavy support from members of the Republican party. The same philosophy holds true in our nation. The election is over. Lets make sure that the best interests of our state and nation transcends party lines, bringing into focus the true course we must follow. No longer can we afford acts of political party expediency to control the votes of our governmental representatives. No longer can we afford to dump leaders because they are not party men", because they do not vote the party philosophy on all issues. Our nation's future is at y stake. Our system can be the instrument that builds or destroys the dreams of our forefathers. It is hoped that our elected leaders represent us welL Utah? In cold, untllled and unwatered soil they cannot hope to grow without our constant support and effort. We all must seek to do our part In bringing them up to their full stature and Those of you who potential. wrote letters to the legislature, those who pledged scholarships, those of you who attended our public meetings and those who worked on committees all need to continually push this cause forward. Our great challenge still remains the same, to show our need for this type of Institution and be willing to carry the peoples share of the work load, and financial sacrifice to balance the Input of the state. Under the present conditions it Is difficult to attract young people to stay here with all the glamour and atmoshpere of the big campuses to lure them away, but If we hope to survive we must have them and simulate should Schools ce off Gallery and spiritual values, moral strengthen the nation, aspire to quality teaching, provide equal lifelong opportunity, foster learning, promote economic prosperity, strive for healthy personality development of all Its pupils and students. Technological progess requires many people to hold three, four, or even more jobs during their working lives. This emphasizes the need to explore approaches to the elimination of adult illiteracy, and establish opportunities for retaining and possibilities for broadening the fields In community adult education. When a community Invests In education, the lives of Its families are enriched, and the professions profit, welfare needs are reduced, cultural opportunities are enhanced, and Its educated citizens accept their community responsibilities. Education should serve as a means to a satisfying personal life. R should develop the individual to the full extent of hls potential, so that he Is able to decide hls own actions In relation to himself and hls environment. Each childs education should enable him to find out what hls abilities are, to be happy with them, and to make the most of them throughout hls life. It is not always readily seen, but the persons in the know realize the great problem that exists.
