Show f STANDARD I Roourvrlt, I'Uk Thuraday, October 17, 1968 Duchesne group enjoys outdoor classroom study A boring experience without boredom was educational excitement and fun for about 125 Duchesne school pupils in a timbered outdoor classroom. At Instigation of Mrs. Doyle Llsonbee, PTA president as a sponsored learning activity three bus loads of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade pupils, teachers and PTA room mothers traveled to the Ashley Forests' campground to learn conservation practices by actual doing, feeling, seeing. Each child used an Increment borer to get a core of wood from a living tree to see how old the tree Is. The cores show growth rings from bark to heartwood and a child could then see some small size trees could actually be much older than a big tree of the same species nearby If It had a harder struggle to survive. By digging with their hands through layers of duff or mulch to the soil underneath the children could feel and see how protected soil absorbs moisture and prevents erosion. They then felt the hardness of bare unprotected soil and could understand how water would run off without sinking into the ground and thus cause floods and gullies. They saw effects of overgrazing and results of irrels, grouse, woodpeckers, deer. They felt and noted difference in needles of limber pine, Douglas fir, Engel mann spruce, alpine fir and red cedar. Climbed over downed and decaying timber and saw how the rotted wood turns to soil. They counted growth rings on the stumps and felt the softness of tiny pine seedlings. Saw how fire, litter. Insects and disease were everyone's enemy to be fought. Sack lunches furnished by school lunch and ice cream furnished by the PTA followed by games increased the entnvment of the outdoor classroom to give insight into the many uses made of forest resources, water, forage, timber wildlife and recreation.
