Show Director of life alcoholism program named Reynold W, Brown has been appointed director of the Ute Tribe alcoholism Education and Rehabilitation Program. This marks the beappointment ginning of actually providing services to the alcoholic In the Uintah Basin. Mr. Brown's appointment was announced by Judge Henry Upchego, Chairman of the Tribe Alcoholism and Committee newly elected President of the Board of Directors for the program, Mr. Upchego Is opto mlstlc about the program and states that he plans to make use of the rehabilltaion services as an alternate to jail sentences for alcoholics seen in his court. Judge Upchego relates that much of the problem of excessive drinking among his people Is reflected In the number of arrests for alcohol drinking, related offences and offences committed while under the influence of alcohol. Mr. Brown and his family, his wife Diane and two children Eric and Lorene, are living in Roosevelt. He was graduated from the University of Utah with a B.A. degree In Psychology in 1963. He received a M.S.W. from the University of Utah Graduate School of Social Work in 19G6. For the past two and a half years, he has been employed with the University of Utah College of Medicine, Alcoholic Rehabilitation Clinic as a clinical social worker. In addition, Mr. Brown has served as Instructor for two years with the Utah School on Alcohol Studies and as a board member for the Alcoholics Rehabilitation Center in Salt Lake as chairman of the rehabilitation committee for the past year. Much of the work in the beginning phase is seen as eduHe cational by Mr, Brown. states that like most people the Indians have little knowledge about alcohol and what alcoholism really is. Experience has shown that as the alcoholic, their families, friends, and employers gain an understanding of this illness, thereby removing many of the stigmas and misconceptions that surround it, they will accept help to correct it. The education program consists of a series of lectures, discussions and films about the characteristics of alcoholism, impact of excessive drinking on ones health, family life, vocational pursuits and religious values. The purpose of the program is to 1) help the Indian people understand the nature and characteristics of problem drinking, 2) help those who are problem drinkers learn how to sustain soberlety and overcome the problems associated with their excessive drinking. Alcoholism Orientation groups have been established in Fort Duchesne, Neola, Rand-le- tt and Whlterocks. Other groups will be formed as the need arises. Referrals to these groups are encouraged from Tribe, Welfare Courts, Departments, Physicians, Churches and other Health Welfare Agencies in the area, said Mr. Brown.
