One little day to pause in devotion to you, whose complete devotion has been measured against the struggle you have waged day by day to give us the chances you wanted us to have. One day to pause from the whirl of what we call business to spend an hour or two in reminisence with her whose every day has been devoted only to giving us days to enjoy that our pleasure may be hers, echoed in a heart whose greatest pleasure has been in making us awkwardly from childhood to budding manhood and womanhood? The pride in those eyes, sometimes so tired from trying to understand; often hurt when we failed to know how much she was doing for us? Beautiful the life of that mother of ours for us. And for us alone she lived lived through those years that made us, finally, into men and women. Proud of us, proud to see us grow, become strpng. Proud when we struck out alone. Yes, proud of it all. And yet keener than knife thrusts the ache that took us from her. Children no longer. Men, now, and women, to glorify her in our happy. accomplishments. Blessed memory! Blessed mother! Watching us yet loving us stronger with every passing day. Proud of us her concern still with the children who no Remember those days when we were young, and so near to her ? That stolen caress as we sat on her knee, folded close in the arms that loved us more because they knew that someday the world would claim us as men and women to carry on the world's work away from them? Remember those confidences as we began to stretch longer huddle around her. Long hold that bond and with life's closing span, let it bring closer and closer the love that is the most exalted of all the love of a mother for her own. |
