Show I THE CITIZEN 3 Southern Utah parks and playgrounds, and Yellowstone park, which obtains a good deal of its traffic through Utah, expect, the best year in their history. The Union Pacific railroad, which has watched attendance at Zions park grow from 8,400 to 30,000 in four years, expects to see that figure go to about 40,000 this year and perhaps as high as 45,000. Additional accomodations, popularization of that section, and growth of the Utah Parks idea are held accountable for the increase. The newly completed Grand Canyon lodge is expected to attract additional thousands, while added cabins and increased facilities at these three places as well as at Cedar Breaks as- sure added comfort for the tourists, and therefore more patronage. Yellowstone, which drew 230,984 people during 1928 for an all-tirecord for that park, is expected to be visited by 250,000 tourists this year. Most of the increase is held responsible to automotive traffics, while the rail travel also has gained me considerably. f Aside from the extensive improvements made last year and going for- V. But still, this consideration really does not enter largely into attraction of tourists, at least according to the experience of Mr. Rishel, who has been working this tourist racket for twenty years, and ought to know. Its the highways that bring the motorists. The increase there will be Rail traffic is due for a normal. Warmer weather, fast drying roads, automobiles, and a place to go. What can Salt Lake City and Utah expect in the way of tourist travel this year? Thats a question that at first glance brings promise of an optimistic answer but that at second consideration reveals that this section has slight expectation for more than the normal increase with one exception. That exception is in Scenic Southern Utah, the paint box of the American continent, and an increasing attraction as a tourist mecca both through rail and automotive travel. In fact, the outlook in southern Utah is bright enough to offset some of the r I t ( gloom for rather an ordinary year in other quarters, and as a result Utah looks forward with general good feeling for the coming open months. W. D. Risliel, secretary of the Utah State automobile association, and tourist authority of the West, conditions says that general- road preclude any expectation of greatly increased traffic through the state in the great annual influx of tourists from East to West and West to Last.
